TODAY’S big race is the Northumberland Plate at Newcastle (3.35pm).

The favourite Gibbs Hill has been well backed in the antepost market but he hasn’t been seen for nearly two years so I’m giving him a wide berth. Stratum perhaps has a squeak on his previous form but is also way too short.

The good news is that this makes the market favourable for us when it comes to the other runners. Regular readers will not be surprised to hear that I fancy TIME TO STUDY again at the current prices. We backed him at Royal Ascot where he bounced back to form quite nicely finishing third at a decent price and I expect him to run well again today. He remains on the same handicap mark which gives him plenty in hand from his best form and the introduction of Kerrin McEvoy, although rather surprising, is no bad thing at all.

Of the others in the race at bigger prices Shabeeb is potentially attractive and I think I need to have a small interest in DESERT SKYLINE at a huge price. Although this is a really competitive handicap he has been competing in Group races and has been dropped a few pounds that should make him competitive here. I can see him being involved due to his class.
