Racing tips: The progressive looking Joker De Mai can win under a 7lb penalty

The idea of the Venetia Williams duo looked better on paper until The Famous Five didn't do much in the opener at Ludlow. The horse lacks gear and isn't exactly well-handicapped off a fairly low mark of 106. Martator put in a much better performance and was only beaten by a horse making their chase debut. There will be a race in him off his current rating, which will more than likely come against some exposed chasers. He was placed and minimised the losses on Wednesday.

Exeter 2:25 – Joker De Mai 7/4 (1pt)

Another day of shoddy racing, so I'd highly recommend not to get involved too much. The only horse I thought was worthy of a bet was Joker De Mai who is a progressive type and can surpass this field for the David Maxwell & Harry Derham combination.

David Maxwell is a decent jockey for all the hate and comments he gets on social media. He isn't a pro jockey, he is an amateur, so what he does is very good and his strike rate would suggest that. He buys nice horses and I think this is another horse he'll be able to have plenty of fun with over the coming seasons. He was somewhat behind Willmount at Newbury on his British debut, but he soon put that performance to bed last time out at Lingfield when winning in easy style off a mark of 118. The handicapper has put him up 10lbs for that run, they have decided to run under the 7lb penalty and David Maxwell still claims 3lbs, so based on that, he is well-in.

This horse handles the soft ground, so the surface he faces today at Exeter will be fine, and based on the run from last time out I think he's got a fair more under the bonnet off his current handicap mark, where the others in the race don't appear to be as well-treated based on their recent form.

I can see why money would come in for Molly Ollys Wishes as she is running off a reduced handicap mark based on her previous season exploits, but she has been very poor recetnyl and struggled in a handicap last time out, so she is clearly on the decline.
