My Astra put in an extraordinary performance in the Listed Fillies race at Ayr yesterday. Tom Marquand got a little lower around the bend and I thought he was about to throw the kitchen sink at her but he just squeezed onher to keep her position and when he did finally ask her to pick up, she stormed clear in the fashion of a serious Group 1 looking filly. Mega performance and it'll be interesting to see what they decide to do with her.
Wolverhampton 1:45
Trainer: Philip Kirby
Jockey: Ryan Sexton (7)
Form: 481226
It's nice to see a maximum capacity race with all 13 stalls being filled, though it's a good sight it does make it more competitive but I do thin SMART BOYO holds every chance now he's back on the all-weather.
This horse is clearly better on this kind of surface than turf, shown by his record on the all-weather compared to his hurdes and flat turf record. He was a winner on his first attempt over 2m in February at Kempton. That win came off a mark of 46, which is 4lbs lower than today's mark and the form looks somewhat okay with the horses in behind running some decent races since. Smart Boyo maintained the good form with two runner-up finishes in a row at Wolverhampton with the first run over 14f where he looked in need of the return back to 16f. He now rated 50 as mentioned previously but Ryan Sexton takes off a very handy 7lbs, so effectively he is running off 43 which is 3lbs lower than his sole win in Feb. I know for a fact he is a stayer at this trip and I think he is a solid alternative to some of the lesser exposed horses who might be trying 16f for the first time.
He is drawn widest of all which is annoying, so will have to be ridden from the back and will need a bit of luck.
Wolverhampton 4:25
Trainer: Ivan Furtado
Jockey: Silvestre De Sousa
Form: 46251-
STARTER FOR TEN will need to defy a 153 day absence if he wants to win this, and normally that would be a big problem for me but the fact he won last time out on the back of a 70 day absence gives the impression catching him fresh is probably the right time to catch him.
He was well fancied last time at Kempton, going off a strong favourite at 13/8F odds. Ivan Furtado is normally a shrewd operator when it comes to his horses being well fancied, and they don't often get it wrong, so they must've felt he was ahead of his rating of 59. It sounds weird saying that there could be a fair bit more to come from this horse as he has only won 2x in his 20 runs to date and he is a 5yo, but based on that that recent run where the form has worked out extremely well, I think his 5lb higher mark of 64 looks well within reach.
SDS is jocked up, who has a 20% SR when riding for Ivan and is drawn in stall 1 so hopefully he'll break well and be able to get a prominent position. A few come into this in good form but they are far more exposed than this horse who should be able to win again, IF he is ready after a fairly long break.
