3.50 Pontefact
THE 2m 5f Pontefract marathon is a unique staying contest for moderate horses and BRANDY JAMES (3.50) may be a bit better class than his rivals. Harry Whittington's four-year-old showed up fairly well at Newbury over hurdles when running sixth to The Knot Is Tied over 2m 3f and Dane O'Neill is a good booking.
With Hearts negotiating a path to the Scottish Cup Final, Tynecastle Park would be an appropriate winner and if he can translate his Fibresand form to turf he rates a big threat.
4.20 Pontefract
TEXTING (4.20) is worth a fairly solid each-way bet in the 6f novice stakes, with Silvestre De Sousa taking the mount on Mohamed Moubarak's filly. She showed a lot of speed at Chelmsford City before fading into third and represents a bit a value against short-priced Collect Call.
3.30 Windsor
It is impossible to know with any degree of certainty if useful all-weather campaigners will go equally well on turf and that applies particularly at this time of year with plenty of winter ‘sand' horses switching to grass. A chance is taken on FIELDS OF ATHENRY (3.30), a smart all-weather performer ridden by Ryan Moore for in-form James Tate. My selection looks sure to appreciate this step up to 1m 2f in handicap company.
Top weight Sam Cooke has already won on turf, landing a fairly modest event at York in October, and is another likely to relish the increase in distance.

i know a few punters who can’t really look in depth at races and they just bet based on what the little write up says in the RP or their betting sites small snippet of info etc. well, just a word of warning that these can be very misleading and i would argue pulling a name out of a hat would be just a good a selection process.
in the 240 at hexham, ringaringarosie went down by a neck to casimir du clos, with claims taken into consideration, rosie was 5lbs lighter, today casimir is 3lbs lighter, which basically means she is 8lbs better off, however sporting life are claiming she is 3lbs worse off which makes absolutely no sense and I thought i’d share for any casual punters who bet without too much investigation as it isn’t the first time i’ve noticed such tomfoolery.
I read it as casimir actually being 2lb better off as the first Sedgefield race min weight is 10-0 being a novice handicap so even having a claimer on of -7lb total weight is still 10-0.
So 10.1 and 10.0 with accounted weight allowance today at 11.1 and 11.1 casmir is 2lb better off?
Nope my bad it is 3lb better off as I didn’t deduct the first weight allowance of 10.1 with his claim would be 10.0 so rose is 3lb worse off
well it’s pretty misleading either way, SL give no indication of a minimum weight although upon researching I see 10.0 is the rule of thumb bottom weight.. however on the BHA it states “43.3 In any Handicap Steeple Chase or Hurdle Race, the original weights may go down to weights below the permitted bottom weight.” which to me implies the bottom weight of 10.0 means diddly squat.
it is confusing as the jockey’s claim in brackets is as normal, something they do remove if it is not in effect e.g. if a 5lb claimer was in a conditional jockeys race and the claim wasn’t allowed, then there would be no number in brackets next to his name..
assuming you are right and the bottom weight was 10.0, then as you say carimir is now 3lbs better whilst the race card states it is 3lbs worse, although it is made more murky as the RP race card states the weights with carimir having his 3lbs taken off and rosie having 5 of his 7 taken off with the abbreviation OW2 after his weight which I don’t know what it means although it clearly relates to the 2lbs not taken off which should have been as the jockey claims 7.
