Grand Roi was strong before the off, being backed into 10/11F but he didn't justify the market support as he was convincingly beaten by the Willie Mullins horse who clearly appreciated the move to fences. Grand Roi was disappointing, I expected a lot more from him, but it seems like he hasn't progressed from the promising horse he once was.
Racing again today is rather poor. There are more races to choose from, but a lack of quality is the problem, which isn't a surprise for a Tuesday. There's a Listed race at Listowel in Ireland, but that looks like a tough race. I like the look of Acklam Express at Beverley in the 3:27, and I know Cairnzy likes that horse too, I'll be having a bet on that horse, but considering Cairnzy is putting that one up, there's no reason for me to double up on it too.
Newcastle 6:30
I'm really not a big fan of putting up horses at prices under EVS, but with not much really catching my eye I think it could be worth potentially doubling Acklam Express (Cairnzy's pick) with ONE WORLD.
It's fair to say that the John & Thady Gosden son of Sea The Stars has been slightly underwhelming with his performances. He was a winner on soft ground on debut, before finishing 12th/13 at Royal Ascot, then being beat in a three-runner-race, before losing at odds of 8/15F. On the bare facts, you'd think he isn't a solid favourite in this, but there's more substance to his form than the numbers look. The time before last he finished behind One Nation, who is a Godolphin horse with a lovely pedigree and will more than likely become a 100-rated horse at some point next year. Coco Jack was back in 3rd that day, he has since won again at Hamilton and is now rated 94. On his last start, he probably bumped into a Class 1 horse or a horse in the high handicap ratings in the shape of Crackovia who looked like a really nice horse for the Johnston's. That horse has since been tried at Listed level, where he finished 0.75L behind the winner in second place at Dusseldorf.
On all of his runs to date, other than the Royal Ascot run, it looks like he needs a longer trip to bring out the best of him, so it's not a surprise to see him running over 10f today. He has a pedigree which suggests this trip is what he wants, and possibly further in the future. Being by Sea The Stars and out of a Dubawi Mare (Time Chaser) who has produced Time Lock who has finished 2nd in a Class 1 Listed race over 12f, backs up the fact he'll enjoy today's trip.
Connections have opted for the Gelding operation after his last run, which should hopefully help him settle in the race and preliminaries, and should allow him to be fully focussed on the task on hand. Benoit De La Sayette takes off a nice 3lbs, and I think he is the one they all have to beat.
