I am glad to see the back of Royal Ascot. It was a tremendous week of racing, full of upsets, but it was extremely difficult to pick winners as you will all be aware of, and that was without a doubt the worst I've ever done at the Royal meeting since I started punting. It was good to see Frankie get a few winners on his last meeting at Royal Ascot, and his glittering end to his career continues and I'm sure he'll land a few more Group 1s before his time is up.
Pontefract 4:45 – Sea Flawless 9/1 (1pt EW WilliamHill 4pl)
This is a very tricky race to weigh up, I'd have imagined that Luisa Casati would've been the favourite based on her good performance at Goodwood in the Listed race last time out, but the penalty seems to have put punters off. I think her low stall and her running style spells disaster and chances are that she'll be tucked at the back of the race on the rail and won't get the gaps. I've taken a chance on the William Haggas-trained, Sea Flawless, who has shown glimpses of promise in her short career so far and I think if she can settle, she could improve the amount required to win this.
This filly has a cracking pedigree. She is by Sea The Stars and out of a Shamardal mare who has produced Al Aasy and Sea Karats. Both of those horses have been placed in Class 1 races, but Al Aasy has produced some very good performances in Group 1 races, including 2nd to Pyledriver in the Coronation Cup. Sea Flawless is a full sibling to both of these horses, so you'd like to think there's more to come from her, especially off her rating of 88. Unfortunately, her ratings means nothing in this race as they will be running off level weights, but it shows the level she's deemed to be at and what improvement is needed to get involved today. She is a lightly raced horse, and I think that's shown in her running style, especially at York last time out where she was keen over 14f, and that saw her not finish her race out as strong as the others. I think she is going to be better over today's trip of 12f as she travelled powerfully through that race last time out, and when the gas tank emptied she went backwards very quickly through the field. They didn't go quick in that race, and it did turn into a sprint, which played a part in her being so keen. With a lot of horses in this race being front runners in their previous races, it looks like it'll be a surefire honest gallop, which should help Sea Flawless settle, and if she does, she is an EW player at the very least.
