Racing tips: Progressive Godolphin 5yo City Walk will appreciate the return to the AW

Yesterday I mentioned how I will be on the side of bad luck after getting lucky with a win on Hello Deira, well it didn't take long to get the bad luck. Mise En Scene was ahead of the eventual winner, before and after the line but when it mattered, she was beaten in a heads-up, heads down. It would've been nice to get the drifted price of 8/1 as a winner, but it wasn't meant to be. Bayside Boy won with a spare bit in hand with the expected NRs not running and creating a fairly decent size rule 4. I think he went off at 5/6, so not exactly the worst odds considering the race was much weaker.

Chelmsford 7:00

My only selection of the day comes at Chelmsford's evening meeting in their main race of the day, a Class 2 6f sprint. You have some steady handicappers in this lineup, including May Sonic (ran in this race last year), Ayr Harbour and many more including stakes winners in the shape of Apollo One and Dubai Station. However, even though this race seems competitive, which it is, I think the Godolphin-trained CITY WALK could be still progressing and win off a mark of 99.

It's strange to say how a 5yo still hasn't reached his peak, but he hasn't. Saeed Bin Suroor does this very frequently with his horses, and they are often slow starters to their careers. We've seen it many times where he runs debutantes who are 4yo's, but they have either taken a long time to mature or they suffer setbacks. This lad hasn't had that kind of profile, but he is still relatively lightly raced as a 5yo with only 14 runs. We've seen that he has had the talent in his locker but he hasn't been able to properly showcase it, until this season where it seems to have clicked, and I think that is due to Saeed allowing him to run on the AW which has turned him around.

he is only 2 from 4 on the AW, but compare that to his strike rate of 1 from 10 on the turf, it seems clear as day to me that he favours the artificial surfaces more than grass. His win at Newcastle over 5f was impressive. He sat off the pace but made rapid progress and stayed on strongly to win by 1.75L beating Dakota Gold who is no slouch. This race is tougher in my opinion, especially off a 7lb higher mark, but I think he is better over this longer trip and has to be backed again until he finally shows the handicapper has caught up with him.

He is a C&D winner, so handles the track well and Richard Kingscote has been given the ride the last couple of times, which is a definite improvement from Cosgrave who has ridden him a lot this year.

There's some good racing on day but seems to be competitive racing where I think it's difficult to find winners. You have the Racing League on at Newcastle if that's something you're into and the start of the Ayr Gold Cup festival kicks off tomorrow as well.
