It's time to come back to reality, after four days of cracking racing, we are now back to Uttoxeter and Kempton for Saturday's racing. Before I put my selections up for today, a little recap for Cheltenham. Four winners from me for the four days, which isn't amazing, but odds of 10/1, 50/1, 15/2 & 12/1 I don't think you could complain, as well as a few placed efforts. Hopefully you ended up in profit, and it's only a matter of weeks before we can get stuck into Aintree and the Grand National.

Uttoxeter 3:35

The race of the day comes at Uttoxeter in the shape of the Midlands Grand National, which is always a good spectacle. Normally, you need horses who carry a low weight, and there's no worry with that this year as Yala Enki has ensured that will happen, as he has made a good portion of the bottom weights running of the handicap, including my selection.

I think it's worth siding with the Irish in this race, even though they don't really have a good record, but there horses seem much better handicapped than the British. YOUNG DEV is my play in the race for the fairly shrewd Denis Hogan team, who can often land a gamble. This lad has been campaigned with a big pot over fences in mind, so the fact they've gone for this particular race makes him of big interest. When I say the way he's been campaigned, I mean the fact he has been sent over hurdles for every single race this year, with his last run over fences coming from last may in a decent pot at the Punchestown festival which was won by Mister Fogpatches, where the selection was pulled-up. The time before that he ran a career best, finishing runner-up and that run received an RRP of 135, which was 13lbs higher than his mark at the time. They've not sent him over hurdles in order to protect his chase handicap mark. He is 7lbs out of the handicap for this, but Mark McDonagh takes off 7lbs, so he comes into off his current mark with all things considered. He has to prove he stays this far, which is a similar case for a lot of these, but he has won on heavy ground before, so the soft ground won't be an issue, and I think if he stays on his feet, he is a lively EW contender.

Of the others in the race, I thought Captain Drake was interesting. He won well last time out in staying fashion over 3m 6f at Exeter, he was a close alternative, but the fact that hard race came 22 days ago gives the impression it might have come too soon for him. If he's fit and ready to go, he's definitely a player, as he has also been a runner-up in this a few years ago.

Time for everyone to get their breath back, another 4 days of helter skelter racing over, most betting banks, mine included will be a few quid less than on Tuesday morning.
Love the 4 days, mainly as a viewing spectacle and if anyone made a few quid, even better.
My highlights, 2 were on day 1, they should rename the final couple of furlongs constitution hill, that was frankelesque in its execution as his opponents were strewn all over the cheltenham countryside.

Next my ride of the week, Tom cannon on edwardstone in the arkle, if this was townend, Russell, de boinville, blackmore etc, the itv pundits would have been drooling all week about it, recovering from a horse falling in front and forced to swerve, losing ground he worked his way back into contention methodically and delivered the stone perfectly to win cosily, this is my opinion from a uk bias of course as there were many great rides but I think the unfashionable Mr cannon deserves a shout.

As for moment of the week, I could go on all day about tiger roll’s achievements and in his final race as a 12 year old and on ground he hates he guttsed it out and was pipped by his stablemate and the reception he got in defeat said it all.
The best ever jumps horse for me winning from the 2 mile triumph hurdle to the 4.5 mile grand national etc etc, as I’ve said plenty over the years, but again my opinion is exactly that and others will have their favourites.

And heartfelt condolences to all connections who lost horses over the 4 days, it’s a sad situation and like it or not it’s unfortunately a by product of this dangerous sport and its gut wrenching when the screens go up, God rest their souls…..

I’m probably a little biased, but the ride on Corach Rambler gets my ride of the week. To come from last to first in a 24+ runner handicap at Cheltenham is some going. Cracking ride.

I feel like the ride on Flooring Porter is getting a lot of praise, and to my eye, I don’t think it deserves it. We all know Danny Mullins is one of the best front running jockeys in the business, but he got an uncontested lead and was never challenged, I think you’ve got to blame the jockeys in behind for letting that happen. But, what do I know?

Patrick’s ride on Billaway was also class IMO horse looked beat most of the 3mile2.
Great Cheltenham bar GDC and Gaelic Warrior being caught it was very decent for me.
Plenty well fancied winners for the punters 👍

And thanks to DC 🇮🇪 for your input this week as usual.
You are obviously a keen student of the game judging by your detailed write ups and are always a good guide from the Irish angle.
Bring on aintree and punchestown 🏇

Yes love the sport and Cheltenham is the highlight for me.
I’ve stopped having bets on a daily basis and just tend to focus on the bigger meetings/ races so it gives me more time to focus on them.
Didn’t fare too well this year at Cheltenham, there were quite a few trend breakers this year and I also think the UK handicapper did a better job on the whole to make it more competitive but State Man winning almost brought me back even.
Roll on next year (only 360 days )

Going to Take Marianchic and Jasperoid in a R/fc Elvis. Got him in my tracker and he will be better for the runs but I do like them both, definitely not a 2 horse race but good payout for a couple of £s R/fc.
      GL….I’ll take 3-6! ;)

Mathletic with Barzalona on board in 2.50 for Fabre looks good but short with a lay off to overcome.
