The good recent form continued as Mark's Choice won easily at his favourite venue Ripon. He would've been very unlucky if he didn't win as he met trouble in running, but he got through that and won with a bit in hand.
I've been complaining about racing recently and today is no different as we have 3 all-weather meetings in one day, all happening during the afternoon. Is there really any need to have three? and if so, surely some are better for the night racing like they normally are.
Hamilton 6:25
With the lack of races which caught my eye, I've landed on COCO JACK in the Class 2 race at Hamilton in what appears to be a decent race. This lad will have to put in a career-best performance to win this off 9st 9lbs and a rating of 90, but I think he is more than capable of running to the required level.
He is without a doubt the class horse in the race so carrying top weight hopefully won't be an issue. The strike rate of his trainer, George Scott, at Hamilton is quite remarkable. He is 4/5 at the track in his lifetime of training, which is a very impressive strike rate. Though it's a small sample size and they are often highly inflated, that is still some going to win 80% of the races he's seen horses in. Coco Jack is a course and distance winner when winning here on his second start of the season back in early June. He has improved plenty since that run and puts in a career-best performance every time he comes back onto the track. Today's race poses new questions as it's back to 6f and it's on the slowest surface he's ever raced on (good-to-soft night before), but it shouldn't be too soft as Hamilton isn't expecting any further rain and they are going to be getting some decent weather.
His run at Glorious Goodwood in a Class 2 Nursery Handicap was eye-catching and I think he ran extremely well considering he was carrying 2nd top weight in a very competitive race. I don't think this race is going to be straightforward, but I think Coco Jack continues to move in the right direction, whereas some of the others seem to have stagnated their progression.
