The only bet of Thursday turned into a winner, as City Walk won with plenty left in hand off a mark of 99. He is a horse who will more than likely go over to Meydan next winter for the races on dirt where he could be competitive in some Class 1 races and grab some decent prize money on offer.
Newbury 2:53
For the first selection of the day I am opting for a competitive 2yo Class 2 race at Newbury, and I like the look of Patrick Owens' daughter of Adaay, STRAWBERRY BELLE.
I think the handicapper could have been on the lenient side with the 2lb rise for her recent 4th/18 run at Newmarket in the Auction race, which saw an RPR of 83 produced, finishing just 1.75L behind the winner, with the likes of Eddie's Boy ahead in third off a mark of 99. She kept on nicely in the final furlong, which gives the impression that an extra furlong won't harm her improvement. Her pedigree suggests that this new trip could unlock more wins and more of her ability, with the Dam winning over 9f and producing Strawberry Jack who has won over a mile.
It's not a surprise to see that this horse isn't favourite for this contest, even though she has a great chance, due to the more well-known trainers bringing their horses to this, but that doesn't bother me as I can get a better price.
Ayr 3:10
I compare this selection to a recent winner for me in the shape of Highland Princess, where the odds you're getting don't quite add up as they are the best horse in the race and it seems like you're missing something as if they repeat their recent form, they should be virtually impossible to beat. My fancy for this, and will be one the best chances of Friday is GALE FORCE MAYA. Surely, the only concern people will have is whether she'll be good on this slightly slower ground. The ground is described as good, and though they are expecting a small amount of rain, it shouldn't be enough to change the going.
This Mare's best form has been on good to firm ground, but this is an easier assignment to what she has been winning and running well against in recent times. The fact she is above EVS is very surprising to me, as she is the highest-rated horse in the race and has the best form in the race by an absolute mile.
She was last seen 12 days ago, and I think Michael Dods wouldn't be risking her if she wasn't 100% as she is a progressive mare at the age of 6 and I'm sure he thinks that they can land some bigger races before she retires to become a broodmare.
