Lilith drifted like a barge and ran like the market suggested.
Great Raffles jumped like a lawnmower at Wetherby, and stayed on okay, but didn't put in the performance I was hoping for under Sean Bowen.
Haydock 2:25 – Arthur's Quay 9/1 (1pt)
I'll take a chance on Arthur's Quay, the outsider of the four-runner field.
He's already been a winning tip for me this season, and I think he is being overlooked in this contest. All of the horses in this field have a question to ask about the trip, but I think Arthur's Quay will probably appreciate it better than the others.
He has done all of his winning over 2m, but he seems to stay the 2m strongly and I think he might be ready for the extra four furlongs. He's been lumping around some big weights in his victories, so the weight he carries today will be a change. His winning streak came to an end last time around when he bumped into Fusain, who was well-handicapped, to say the least. The Patrick Neville horse went on to win as he liked the time after, and I thought it was a decent display from Arthur's Quay who was in behind him. He jumped well that day but didn't look to have the pace on quick ground, so a return to a softer surface should also help. Despite finishing second, he did produce a good RPR of 132, which is 6 lbs higher than his mark, and his mark wasn't altered by the handicapper.
Only The Bold has looked a different horse since moving to David Pipe's yard and over fences but has done his winning over 3m and 3m 1f, so this is much different, plus is 20 lbs higher in the handicap since winning his two chase races. I have my reservations about Richmond Lake staying this trip today. He was quite a free-going sort over hurdles, likes to run from the front and his pedigree doesn't strike as one who will relish this step up in trip. Ned Tanner looks like a strong stayer over 2m 7f, so might need further. It's a long run in at Haydock, so his stamina might be an advantage, but he might lack the pace.
Ffos Las 1:30 – Bannow Bay Boy 2/1 (2pt)
This is a poor race and is screaming out for an unexposed horse to come and blow them away.
I'm not for one minute suggesting Bannow Bay Boy is going to be anything special, but he has looked more than capable of beating this field based on his novice runs. He has gone through his races nicely but has failed to see out the trips, so I think the drop back to 2m will be a positive for him, especially on heavy ground.
Tom Lacey remains in great form and has had 3 winners from 10 runners in the last fortnight. Jockey Cameron Iles has done well when teaming up with Tom Lacey this year (4 wins from 11 runners), and the 10lb claimer looks worth his weight in gold with that claim, and his claim will make life much easier on today's ground.hayd
