Racing tips: A true test of stamina is what Broomfield Present has been needing

Zhiguli put in a shoddy performance when backed into favourite when it became a two-horse race. Off the bridle with a circuit to go, sloppy jumps and didn't stay on. Flintara was also backed into favourite after there was a NR in her race, she jumped well and showed the strongest stamina in the race as expected.

Exeter 2:50 – Broomfield Present 2/1 (2pt, WilliamHill)

After saying I wouldn't be backing Broomfield Present after he was brought down at Uttoxeter, here we are just 17 days later with him being my sole selection of the day.

Normally, I'd stick to my word, but I really do believe this horse needed a thorough stamina test and today he gets it. He is a lazy horse, he will be on and off the bridle for the majority of the race, that's how he is, so you'll probably be able to get some bigger odds in play, but I have been reeled in with them trying the extended 3m 6f. Though he is a lazy horse, I do think he is an out-and-out stayer and is probably the strongest stayer of this field, which is a bold statement given he's not run over 3m 1f, but he has always been plugging on over shorter trips. He ran well at Exeter over 3m on seasonal reappearance and chase debut where he was outpaced, but kept on strongly, especially over the last fence where he reduced the deficit to 2.25L after being at least triple that behind the winner when jumping the final fence.

I don't think he would've won last time out at Uttoxeter as the winner was travelling nicely at the time one horse fell and brought down Broomfield Present, but knowing how well this horse stays and grinds away it might've got interesting. Racing Post gave him a rating of 135 for that departure, which is 8lbs higher than his current mark, which is interesting given he departed around three from home. I do think he has a race or two off his current handicap mark, it's just not a pretty viewing when you're a backer of his.

David Bass takes the ride, which shows the belief they have in this horse as he could've easily gone to Leicester for the ride on The Edgar Wallace who won last time out and has a decent claim of getting a second win in a row.
