When you get two winners from three selections you would normally be happy, but I feel like I wanted the hattrick of wins with the George Scott 2yo being well-supported in EVS. I took the risk on that the unraced horses wouldn't be great, but two of them finished ahead of him, so I've got no one to blame other than myself. All in all, a solid day.
Yarmouth 3:30 – King Of The Plains 3/1 (1pt Bet365)
I really do think it is worth taking on the odds-on favourite in this race, and the one I landed on was King Of The Plains, who made a very nice debut at Chester 20 days ago.
Ghara has some nice form tied in with Class 1 level, with her fourth in a Listed race last time around, which has form intertwined with a Group 1 race, so on paper, she is the one to beat. However, I was pleased with the debut run of my selection at Chester. Chester is not an easy track to make your debut, as it's very tight and when you're a decent way off the leaders we all know it's difficult to bridge the gap. He seemed to handle the track to a decent level, I wouldn't say he was in love with it, but the manner in which he stayed on in the final furlong looked like a horse who has a bit about him and could easily put it up to the 96 rated Gosden filly.
He is by Roaring Lion, so the fast ground should definitely be more his cup of tea than the soft ground he faced at Chester. With that experience under his belt, I think he could cause an upset.
Ripon 4:20 – Nigwa 15/8 (2pt Bet365)
Some of you might remember when I put up Nigwa after she made a very pleasing debut effort at Nottingham, unfortunately for me, she was beaten when I stuck her up, and I've left her alone until now.
I kept an eye on her last time out when she was running at Hamilton in the super series, which is basically Class 4 races worth many times what you would normally get, with that specific race returning 15k. Those kinds of races are always strongly contested so I decided to leave it alone, but I saw that she finished a close second to a horse I also previously tipped up, and I think that rates as very good form. She has only gone up 1lb in the handicap for that run, which is on the low side, and based on what I've seen from her so far in her career, a mark of 80 is definitely winnable.
The trainer seems to think the ground will be what she likes best, and she is already a C&D winner, which is always a benefit, especially at Ripon which is deemed to be a specialist track.
