A great granny from Merseyside, who won last Saturday’s Scoop6, will bid to add a further £702,010 to her haul in Saturday’s bonus race.
Geraldine Hughes, 67 from Hoylake, picked up £154,782 using the age-old technique of nice names to find her six winners including 33-1 outsider Splash Of Ginge in the big race of the day at Newbury.
The win fund for last weekend’s Scoop6 amounted to £54,782 but Geraldine pocketed a further £100,000 offered by Betfred boss Fred Done for having her £2 flutter in one of his shops.
The Betfred Grand National Trial is all that stands between Geraldine and the life-changing bonus fund and she will be enjoying the race at Haydock along with 34 members of her family courtesy of Betfred.
In the unlikely event of Haydock being abandoned the bonus race will move to Ascot for the Great British Drama Handicap Hurdle (3.15).
Mother-of-six Geraldine said: “It’s been a fantastic few days and I’ve not been able to sleep since the win. It’s unbelievable and what made it even more incredible was when my husband Wally rang me the next day to tell me I’d had a £100,000 bonus added to my win as we’d put the bet on with Betfred – he’d read about it in the Racing Post.
“I’ve had four winners before but never had all six. My best wins before this have been a few hundred pounds on the placepot.
“This is life-changing for us and now we’ve got a £702,000 bonus to aim for on Saturday in the Betfred Grand National Trial at Haydock and I really cannot believe that.
“I thought they were kidding when they told me I had an extra £100,000 bonus on Sunday and now a free go for another £702,000 this week in the bonus fund is mind-boggling.”
Betfred boss Fred done said: “Our biggest ever female Scoop6 winner was Agnes Haddock – who landed £688,620 after placing her £2 Scoop6 in the Betfred shop in Northwich, Cheshire, in February 2007.
“But if Geraldine lands the bonus like Aggie did then she will take her crown as Britain’s most successful female gambler on the horses and all for just two quid.
“Geraldine has already collected a £100,000 bonus for placing her £2 bet in a Betfred shop and now she’s looking at an even bigger bonus with a free pick in Saturday’s big race at Haydock.
“I am known as the Bonus King so wish Geraldine well with her bonus bid. If she pulls it off she’ll be the first winner, man or woman, of two bonuses in the space of a week on the Scoop6.”
Saturday’s win fund builds from zero and features action from Ascot and Haydock. Anyone lucky enough to land the bet will play for the huge bonus fund if it isn’t won.
The totejackpot is at Hayock on Saturday while the totetrifecta rollover race will be the Betfred Grand National Trial (2.55 Haydock).
