JOHNB is well known on the mrfixitstips site as a horse racing tipster with knowledge of the sport that few can match. He has recently launched his Johnb Racing venture and is offering the chance to join him in owning a share of a broodmare. Sound like something you might be interested in? Then read on.
Johnb says: Ownership with Johnb Racing is free of all the complications of racehorse ownership. We’ll keep you up to date with all the latest developments and plans for your Broodmare. Your job is simply to savour the fun, the excitement, and naturally the gloy.
Owning a Broodmare is different to owning a racehorse that is ready to run. I personally think owning a Broodmare is more satisfying, more educational and more fun, from choosing which stallions to cover your broodmare to seeing the foal develop from day one.
Being in the winners enclosure with a horse you own is a great feeling but doing it with a horse you have bred is something special that not many people get the chance to experience.
Johnb Racing wants to give people that chance, I want to give people that chance to experience it first hand. You will be able to see your broodmare and foal in the flesh and on video with our video diary that will show the progress of our foal. The three broodmares I have shortlisted are all well regarded and are all in foal to stallions with a good pedigree.
The first mare is in foal to Eagle Top who is from an exceptional family and he was only beaten a nose by Postponed in the group one King George IV and Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Royal Ascot and was a group two winner.
The second mare is in foal to the group one winner Garswood. And the third mare is in foal to Darley Stallion Poets Voice who has already in his short stallion career produced group three winner Poets Vanity, who was also seventh in this year's 1000 Guineas won by Winter, German 2000 Guineas winner Poetic Dream and Group three winner Poets Word.
For future covers I will endeavour to get the best nominations for our broodmare, this opportunity is for people who want to get involved from the earliest stage and be a part of something special.
Fees
The rate for boarding an in-foal mare can vary from £15 to £20 per day plus VAT. There are also extras such as farrier about every six to eight weeks, worming and veterinary, which is charged direct from the vets.
Once the foal is weaned they become a separate item at £13-50 to £18 a day, plus extras as above, but farrier not always needed as much.
Sales preparation is normally about £22 to £25 per day.
Shares
We are looking at 180 shares for the broodmare. 10 shares = £75 per week will be taken up by myself, that leaves 170 shares at £7.50 per week available.
The 180 shares at £7.50 per week gives us £70,200 per year to cover the purchase of the broodmare, homing of the broodmare and foal and to pay for the next cover by a stallion along with any other extras.
Working to these figures gives us the chance of getting nominations with the best stallions for our broodmare.
To try and make it more affordable, half shares at £3.75 per week will be available with payments either four weekly or yearly.
All the money left over will go towards training fees if we decide to race our foals ourselves, members can acquire as many shares as they like.
Prize money
How all prize money and money from sales of foals will be divided:
All profits will be divided into 220 shares. Of the 220 shares 40 go to racing and homeless charities plus another charity voted by members and the other 180 shares go back to the members.
Long term I feel the broodmare will be able to sustain herself with the right breeding and with my knowledge of breeding and eye for a good horse we have a good chance of making this profitable.
How to get involved
Anyone interested can get my email from admin or you can find me on Facebook/Twitter. I am happy to answer any questions.
At Johnb Racing we would like to make it as affordable as we can. As we are just starting out it's difficult to know just how many people would be interested but the more we get the cheaper it gets, we are also looking into sponsorship which would make it cheaper.
Evening John this sounds really great and I wish you the best in your venture. Making racing more accessible through routes other then direct punting has to be a positive move. A question that others may be thinking so I have posted here. What sort of timescale you working towards to get all shares filled and get this off the ground?
Thanks.
Hopefully a couple of months, things have to move quickly as a lot of Broodmares are being snapped up, these three in particular I can’t see being available too long,
I am currently working on getting a nomination with Camelot, I am pushing the Charity side with Coolmore to hopefully clinch getting Camelot to cover the Mare we get, his fee is €35,000 this year but his first crop are looking good
