Sparks Fly put in a tremendous performance at Saint-Cloud to make it a fourth win at that venue.
I was slightly concerned when one of the French runners pressed on and challenged Sparks Fly for the lead. Laura didn't panic, and when she said go, the filly powered home.
Spadestep was cracking on his chasing debut, but bumped into a horse who was better.
Very rarely can you hold your hands up with a jumps race and say there was nothing more your fancy could have done. I can't remember a horse at this level putting in a round of jumping on his first start over fences like Spadestep did. He jumped better than the winner and had no excuses.
Once again, I can't catch Caballo De Mar at the right time.
His race was over from the start, as he was pushed along very early and never looked at the races.
Rocky's Diamond 5/4 (1pt) – Wexford 3.30
Last season, Rocky's Diamond came out of nowhere to show that he is a Grade 1-level performer over hurdles. He made a winning chasing debut at Galway last time out, and he'll want to cement himself as a leading player in the novice chasing division.
I think there are plenty of positives to take away from his run at Galway. He didn't put a foot wrong at a testing chasing course, and managed to win over a much shorter than ideal trip.
He didn't look like a complete natural and was a bit slow over a few of his fences, but there are plenty of reasons to believe he will improve for that outing.
10st 9lbs is a nice racing weight in this race, and gets plenty of weight from horses in this field. I was expecting slightly bigger odds, as there are horses from the biggest Irish yards, but evidently, the bookies are scared off this progressive five-year-old.
Back it with Tote (no fixed odds)Mutual Respect 6/1 (1pt) – Bangor-on-Dee 1.40
I mentioned a couple of days ago how Billy Aprahamian is such a good trainer who does very well with the small number of horses he has in his yard.
He is mustard with training chasers, and Mutual Respect is a horse who has done well over the larger obstacles under Billy.
Mutual Respect has three career wins, all coming over fences off a handicap mark of 93. Today, he finds himself on that magic number and is back at a track he has won at before.
He managed to win this race last year, so it's interesting that he returns for another go at it, with a recent wind surgery aiming to return him to form.
Back it with Tote (no fixed odds)Bridget Mary 2/1 (1pt) – Bangor-on-Dee 2.47
This is an interesting race as no horse comes with a run under their belt this season.
I think you can give a chance to a few of these, but Bridget Mary at the bottom of the weights was the one I thought had the best chance of winning.
I don't believe that she is on a fantastic handicap mark, but she has only raced four times over fences, and has a 50% SR. She is very unexposed as a chaser, and given how easily she won on her final start at Bangor, she must be in with a very solid chance.
Back it with Tote (no fixed odds)Doctor Kildare 13/2 (1pt) – Bangor-on-Dee 4.30
Sam Thomas has started to become one of the better jumps trainers on the circuit. The Welsh trainer has a very good strike rate and knows how and where to place his horses.
He usually takes off the summer months, so having three runners for this new season isn't abnormal. However, from the three runs, he has had a winner and a short head horse in runner-up.
Sam Johnston is his stable jockey, and I think this is a great bit of placing by Sam Thomas once again. This is a conditional jockey's race, but Dylan is like a fully fledged jockey and can still claim 3lbs and get into these races.
This is the horse's first run for Sam after leaving Nicky Henderson's yard. He has won at this track before, and Sam can get one ready first time out.
