THE EBOR Festival at York reaches its climax today with some cracking racing including the £1m Ebor Handicap itself at 3.40pm. There are plenty of great value bets to be had I think and let’s hope that a few of them can do the business for us to end another good week in style.

I am really surprised at the prices available for SPACE TRAVELLER in this race. Yes he is facing older rivals today and wasn’t at his best last time but his form from Ascot has been franked since with the runner up improving and crucially this big step up in trip today from 7f to 10f could be the making of him. I think he is worth chancing with a win bet at these prices in the hope that the new trip brings out the best in him. The ideal bet though is to use the ‘each way extra’ market with Bet365 where they offer 3 places each way (despite only 6 runners) and you get a slightly lower price. In this case it’s 8-1 but I think that is ideal for us in these circumstances so that’s the way I will play it.

Another one who looks far too big a price to me is STARCZEWSKI who won really well last time out when upped to this distance and although having to carry more weight today we don’t know how much further improvement he has in him. He looks a really good each way bet to me.

This is the feature race of the week – the Ebor – which is the most valuable handicap run all season and with 22 entries and loads of extra place offers I am taking the liberty of selecting two against the field.
My first choice is MEKONG who is a classy animal with top connections. He doesn’t always settle well into his races but that might not be a problem today because arriving late on the scene will be a bonus. He has one of the very best jockeys on board in the shape of Ryan Moore and this test today could he absolutely perfect for him.
My second choice is DRAMATIC QUEEN for William Haggas and good old Danny Tudhope. The horse won a group 3 over this course and distance which is a big help today and that is the main piece of form that attracts me to her. This may well have been her target since that day so I’m not too concerned about her poor run last time out. She is a very big price for a classy horse who has course and distance form.
There are firms offering 7 and 8 places today for each way bets so make sure you take full advantage.
5.20pm York
My last tip of the day is RECON MISSION in the lucky last. He has some excellent form this season and has the benefit of Cieren Fallon on board in this apprentice only race. I can see Fallon judging the pace nicely whilst others go off too quickly and then bringing this proven 6 furlong horse through to lead in the final strides. Looks great each way value to me.
