VALUE appears pretty thin on the ground at Chester on Thursday – so again keep stakes low – but luckily Channel 4 also take in the 2.30 at Goodwood which hopefully throws up the best bet of the day.
In the old days, when you had to write out a betting slip in the bookmakers or ring them up to place your bet, I may have fought shy of backing Bancnuanaheireann.
It probably would have taken about 15 minutes to write the bet out correctly or about the same time to pronounce it properly to the telephonist!
No such problems for click-of-a-button online punters – though I hope I have spelt it correctly now – and Mick Appleby's stable star looks primed to go close here. I'll be looking to get with him at around the 8.0 or 9.0 mark.
A word of warning though – confidence would be dented somewhat if there was a lot of rain at the course.
While Bancnuanaheireann has disappointed on his two starts this season, his up-and-coming trainer reports he wasn't suited by the track at Ripon last time. If back in the form that saw him finish fourth over this trip in the Cambridgeshire, or a narrow second here over 1m here last year off a 1lb higher mark, then he has excellent claims.
Looking at Chester now and the small fields of the Chester Vase and Huxley Stakes make them pretty unattractive betting mediums – notwithstanding a slight preference is for Miblish at around the 10.0 mark in the latter race at 2.15 – but there could be some mileage in siding with Eshtibaak in the opener at 1.45.
I would expect him to trade around the 8.0 to 9.0 mark when the market settles down, and that may be worth a small interest, even though stall nine isn't ideal.
He was well backed for the Lincoln, where he ran well for a long way before weakening close home. But I think 1m2f and fast ground here is likely to suit him better than a mile on soft going did at Doncaster.
Eshtibaak clearly didn't meet expectations after winning a Lingfield handicap over 1m2f on his reappearance last season but showed promise thereafter and the way in which he has been supported in his three starts since suggests he is thought capable of better than a 92-rated handicapper.
Recommended Bets
Back Eshtibaak in the 1.45 at Chester at 8.0 or better
Back Bancnuanaheireann in the 2.30 at Goodwood at 8.0 or better

JIVE in the 15:10 at Chester.
This filly caught the eye on debut when finishing fifth to Quatuor at Windsor last month. She ran on well in the closing stages, but failed to deliver a challenge behind the game front running winner.
I think she is open to improvement and should run well at a decent price.
At present she is trading at 8.2 on the exchange.

Sole Danser is on the very cusp of one of those sequences that Milton Bradley’s sprinters still go on every now and then, and I think it can start today, in the 16:05 at Goodwood. That he’s coming to Goodwood is part of the appeal, as it’s a track that promises to be right up his street, given his style, and he’s also potentially ideally drawn in 12, with the only front-runners (Where’s Reiley and Bermondsey Bob) in that area, in 10 and 11 respectively. He looked as if he was going to win at Chepstow last Thursday until flattening out, excusable on account of the fact he was returning from a 3-month break. He should be spot on this afternoon.

CHESTER PLACEPOT
——————————
13:45 – Sir John Hawkwood has the potential to develop into the best of this bunch but there is a concern that today’s distance of a mile and a quarter will be on the sharp side on his return, particularly at this venue, so we will instead side with Assizes and Eshtibaak. The former is on a workable mark of 84 and, although he has just the one win to his name, is fairly consistent and ought to strip fitter for his return at Wolverhampton in March whilst Eshtibaak will be suited by this step up in trip, having been strong in the betting for the Lincoln last time, and the suspicion is that we are yet to see the best of him.
14:15 – Neither Highland Knight or Gabrial are certain to be as effective at 10 furlongs as they are at a mile whilst Bonfire hardly set the world alight on his return in the Earl Of Sefton so the two most solid options are Danadana, who made great strides last year by winning several good-quality handicaps and deserves this step up in grade, and Miblish, who has the physique to suggest that he could prove capable of better still having put up a career-best at Kempton last time.
14:45 – Ruler Of The World, a half-brother to the top-class Duke Of Marmalade, impressed when winning on debut at the Curragh and will need to be winning this if he is to develop into a realistic Derby contender, but concerns over the application of cheekpieces this early in his career have led to me instead banking upon Havana Beat. The three-year-old showed plenty of promise as a juvenile and also on his return in a sales race at Newmarket, form which appeals as being strong; he sets a lofty standard and remains open to improvement himself now tackling 12 furlongs, a distance at which he could excel.
15:15 – This is a tricky contest and matters will be complicated further still were there to be a non-runner so we certainly want two on side, namely Ribaat and Here Comes When. The first mentioned cost 280,000 gns as a yearling and made an taking winning debut at Haydock in August; he didn’t quite meet expectations on his next start at Doncaster, despite actually improving in form terms, but his Newbury reappearance was full of promise and he ought to go well. Here Comes When finished a couple of places ahead of Ribaat in the aforementioned Newbury affair and did well to gain second, having been poorly placed, and he could yet have more to offer in handicaps.
15:50 – Inciting Incident and Fine ‘n Dandy both looked to possess plenty of speed on their racecourse debuts and, having been granted handy stalls in four and three respectively, it would come as something of a surprise were both of them to miss the places.
16:25 – I really fancy Moviesta to go close here, as he appeals as an upwardly mobile sprinter who could take this on his way to greater things. The way in which he travelled when winning at Doncaster last time certainly suggested that there would be more to come, and he ought to confirm that impression here. Given the nature of these races however it may be wise to include some back-up and the one selected is Irish raider Your Pal Tal, who is bred to be quick and, though he flopped on heavy ground on his turf debut, will encounter drastically different conditions here, has been handed the plum draw and is worthy of another chance.
