Waiting on your placepot :D
14:10 – Plenty go to post for the opening leg but very few are of any real interest, so we ought to progress without a hitch by selecting both Marcus Caesar and Loucal. The first mentioned has had just the five starts but already looks fairly consistent, having made the frame on four occasions, and he will be suited by this return to seven furlongs whilst Loucal, trained by Noel Quinlan, shaped as if he were still in good form at Kempton last time, despite not getting the run of things, and he remains on a workable mark.
14:40 – The Michael Bell-trained Piazon shaped well, amidst clear signs of greenness, on debut at Newmarket earlier this month in what appeals as being a decent race and he could prove to be simply too good for his rivals here with the additional furlong expected to suit.
15:10 – The seven furlong fillies’ maiden has been split into two divisions, with both contests fairly weak affairs, so we are quite content to select a banker in each half. The one to side with here is Garden Row, who is a sister to the useful five furlong winner Madame Trop Vite and a half-sister to several winners at up to a mile and a half. She cost 100,000 gns as a foal, represents the powerful William Haggas yard and wouldn’t need to be anything out of the ordinary to make a winning debut.
15:40 – Dodina and Drahem, saddled by Peter Chapple-Hyam and James Fanshawe, are of obvious interest on debut but with three places on offer we need only select one. Dodina is the one to make the cut, with the three-year-old making plenty of appeal on paper and her yard more than capable of readying one first-time up.
16:10 – Last Sovereign and Bedloe’s Island are the pair to side with in the penultimate leg, with the latter contesting this lesser race having been found out ever so slightly in a decent affair at York last Thursday. It is worth forgiving Last Sovereign’s Chester effort as he blew the start and had no real chance from thereafter; it would come as no surprise were he to bounce back here.
16:40 – Of the likely improvers in the sixth race, of which there are several, the one we are most interested in is the Julie Camacho-trained Rex Whistler, who makes his handicap debut here. The three-year-old has improved with each outing and will appreciate this step up to a mile, so he is far from a forlorn hope. Curl is yet to win a race and looked a difficult ride at this venue last time but her best effort came when equipped with blinkers last term so, with that aid in place once more, it wouldn’t be the biggest surprise to see her acquit herself well.
Selections:
14:10 – 2, 4
14:40 – 2
15:10 – 8
15:40 – 6
16:10 – 1, 2
16:40 – 7, 9
= 8 lines

Lucky 15 on 4 fold only,
Fantastic
Mata Hari Blue has been in good heart since joining the Michael Appleby yard and looks sure to go close in the 16:30 at Southwell. An emphatic winner at Southwell on her penultimate start, Mata Hari Blue demonstrated that she remains in good form when running to a similar level, albeit in defeat, earlier this month, finishing third as the front trio pulled clear of the remainder. She faces some promising types, notably Dancheur, but her proven record on the fibresand should stand her in good stead and she will give a good account.
Back Mata Hari Blue @ 2.64 in the 16:30 at Southwell

It would take a shrewd man to make a convincing case for Fear Glic in the 19f handicap hurdle at 15:20, but that’s how the name of Jackie du Plessis’ gelding translates from Irish. You don’t have to be too clever to see that he’s potentially overpriced here, however, as his debut win for du Plessis came on a lively surface here last summer, when he had a pair of subsequent winners in his wake. A blow-out on his subsequent handicap bow is reason enough for him being friendless, but that came on softer ground, and the indications are that, like his sire Dr Massini, he needs to hear his hooves rattle to show his best form. Smalib Monterg is an obvious favourite after a career-best effort at Aintree on Friday, but the quick turnaround is a minor concern (will be reassessed tomorrow), and the odds on Fear Glic are too good to ignore.

IPL CRICKET
——————-
Chennai Super Kings v Mumbai Indians
3:30PM ITV4 – TUESDAY
Chennai Super Kings
Chennai finished top of the points table. They bristled with power and had the air of a team which could win when they want. Indeed, sometimes they looked disinterested. That won’t be a problem at the business end. What might be is history. They are aiming to become the first team in five years to finish top and still lift the trophy. That is the sort of stat, however, a punter can become obsessed by and can probably be dismissed as a quirk. Chennai have alreay won the whole thing twice so that stat is the more pertinent. With 646 runs Mike Hussey has been immense. Suresh Raina and MS Dhoni have also been superb. Dwayne Bravo, with 25 wickets and 106 runs, is one of the stellar all-rounders.
Mumbai Indians
Mumbai were only pipped from top spot on run rate. They might argue that is not a bad thing. They are a difficult side to gauge. They have alost ripped up pre-seaon plans and started again with the jettisoning of their captain, Ricky Ponting. Sachin Tendulkar’s sprained hand gave them the chance to try other options and that was useful because the Little Master had not performed. As it is Glenn Maxwell has not taken his opportunity so Tendulkar comes straight back in. Aditya Tare could also lose his spot. Ponting might return but more likely is that Dwayne Smith’s power hitting will be required. Mitchell Johnson, who missed the defeat by King’s XI last time, is their top wicket-taker and is certain to return.
Tournament odds
At the start of the tournament this column advised a back-to-lay of Hyderabad at 22.00. The time has now come for the lay and you should do so at 9.00. Chennai are 2.54, Mumbai, our outright tip, are 2.58. Rajasthan are 9.20.
First-innings runs
Here are the last eight first-innings scores (most recent first) at the Feroz Shah Kotla: 183-120-161-169-114-165-215-136. That is an average of 159. It should be noted, however, that going over 160 would have paid off five times. Chennai have passed 160 six times out of seven when they have batted first this term. Mumbai have busted 160 seven times in their last ten first digs. It looks like the smartest bet for this match to go over 160 again although we might not get more than 1.70.
Match odds
It is important to note that defeat does not spell the end of the IPL campaign for either side. As they finished Nos 1 and 2 respectively, Chennai and Mumbai will get another chance if they lose, playing off against the winner of the eliminator: Rajasthan v Hyderabad. On the head-to-head, Mumbai would appear to have the advantage. They have already beaten CSK twice this season. They won by nine runs in Chennai and then by 60 on home turf. Indeed, Chennai were awful that day and it was one of those when they looked lazy. They were bowled out for 79 with Johnson and Pragyan Ojha taking six wickets between them. In Chennai’s favour is a win in the eliminator last season. Mumbai are outsiders and make for a solid trade at 2.10. Chennai are 1.89.
Top Chennai runscorer
Hussey and Dhoni have top scored against Mumbai this term. They will go off at 4.00 and 6.50 respectively. Dhoni also top scored in the eliminator win last year.
Top Mumbai runscorer
Tendulkar is no bet here. With an injured hand and poor form it would be crazy to risk him at such short odds as 4.50. Rohit Sharma and Dinesh Karthi are Mumbai’s best batsmen. Sharma took honours in the win in Mumbai. Karthik top scored in the eliminator last season. Kieron Pollard hit 51 from 38 balls in Chennai.
Recommended bet

RUGBY LEAGUE – MONDAY 7:45pm
————————————————-
Leeds Rhinos vs St Helens
Injuries to Jamie Peacock, Brett Delaney and Carl Ablett mean the result of Monday’s fixture looks much less clear cut that it did a week or so ago. Those losses should level things up a bit with Saints still ravaged my injuries themselves, and the inevitable reshuffles could turn a few trends on their head.
Neither side have been involved in many games to go over the points lines this season, but with Leeds missing three of their most hard working forwards, and Saints are still without top tackler James Roby.
That all points to a more open game than can often be the case between the two sides and an overs line of around 47.5 will make plenty of appeal.
Recommended bet
back over 47.5 pts at around 1.8

MILESEY’S BET OF THE DAY
————————————-
Tigre v Lanús – 00:15 Kick Off
Tigre’s up and down form is easily explained by their over-stretched squad, and a squad that only narrowly avoided relegation while reaching the Copa Sudamericana final in December.
It was a ludicrous season of paradox as they toiled at the bottom of the table while somehow romping on in continental competition and Nestor Gorosito seems to have continued that trend with Tigre advancing to the knockout stages of the Copa Libertadores (the next step up) despite extremely indifferent form at domestic level.
After a difficult trip to Paraguay on Thursday night, a Monday night fixture against one of Argentina’s leading sides is hardly the ideal follow-up and despite the visitors’ irritating penchant for draws at the moment, they should come good with a win in Victoria.
Recommended bet: Back Lanús at 2.05

Wosayu is 6/1. Bit confused by this. Cheers for the tips.
Was big price last night, but 4 non runners today, so the outsider is only 14/1 ( spirit of lake ) only 6 runners in this race now, value has completely gone due to the 4 non runners, WOSAYU is at 7.6 on betfair, really need it to win now to be honest, has every chance, but value in this race has completely gone !

The opening play-off match pitches the best two sides in this year’s IPL with a place in the final at stake. Mumbai’s bowlers give their side a slight edge…
Chennai Super Kings vs Mumbai Indians
Start Time: 3:30pm ITV4
Chennai Super Kings
There can be no meaningful doubt that these have been the best two sides in this year’s IPL, and deserve the advantages earned by filling the top-two positions in the points table. Whoever wins this first qualifier goes through to Sunday’s final, while the losers get another chance on Friday against the winners of Wednesday’s eliminator between Sunrisers and Rajasthan.
On the basis of this season’s table-topping form, a remarkably deep batting line-up, peerless tournament pedigree and that potential second chance to progress, it would be a big surprise were CSK not to reach their fourth straight IPL final. This first qualifier, however, is far from straightforward considering they lost both home and away fixtures to Mumbai. Chennai’s strength lies in the middle-order’s ability to hit almost any score at will during the death overs, but sights will have to be set a little lower against the likes of Lasith Malinga and Mitchell Johnson.
Mumbai Indians
Mumbai are also play-off regulars, making their fourth appearance, but this stellar line-up has yet to win an IPL and have only reached one final, losing to Chennai in 2010. It must be said, however, that this year’s team looks stronger. For me the key difference has been Johnson, whose pacy swing bowling has caused havoc and ensured opponents get no respite when Malinga is off. Consequently they are very hard side to chase against, while very few sides have looked capable of containing Rohit Sharma and Kieron Pollard at the death. The only slight doubt concerns the neutral venue. Mumbai won all eight matches at the fortress Wankhede Stadium but were less convincing away from home, and lost at today’s ground to bottom-placed Delhi.
First Innings Runs
As usual, Feroz Shah Kotla has seen a range of totals over the course of the season but they offer little guide at this stage of the tournament. In the last two IPL’s, the pitches prepared for the play-offs have tended to be very easy for batting, producing six scores of 175 or more from eight matches. Presumably the sponsors want to see plenty of sixes on these set-piece occasions. Moreover, Delhi would boast a higher average if Daredevils hadn’t had such a poor season and has always been a ground where good teams can record big totals. RCB hit 183 in the last first innings here and it is hard to see how either of these superb line-ups will fail to register something competitive. I’ll be backing 160 or more at around 2.0 and 180 plus at a more speculative 4.0.
Match odds
This looks almost a perfect 50/50 match so on value grounds, I’m going for Mumbai at 2.1. It is also worth remembering that Mumbai have beaten Chennai twice this season and, critically, shown they can stem the flow of runs at the death. This may well boil down to which side scores more in the last five overs. If so, I’d rather be on Malinga and Johnson than Bravo and Morris.
Top Chennai batsman
As always, one could make a case for any of Chennai’s top-six so I’m inclined to look for bigger prices than the short odds about Mike Hussey and Suresh Raina. The boundaries are very much within range on this ground so expect MS Dhoni to play a pivotal role. The CSK skipper is good value at around 7.0 to top-score.
Top Mumbai batsman
Again, the plan here is to back a big-hitter. Pollard and Sharma are obvious but the former usually arrives at the crease too late and the latter is the favourite. Instead, I like Dwayne Smith at around 5.0. As an opener, there is always a chance he could take this market beyond the reach of others with a batch of early sixes and the CSK new-ball bowlers could be vulnerable at this ground.
Recommended bet
