EIGHT races from three different courses on Channel 4 on Saturday but in truth just one confident bet is hard to unearth on a desperately difficult day's punting. So this isn't a day to go firing in heavily.

But it could be worth chancing Bertiewhittle at odds of 18.0 in the 3,50 at Ascot.

As he is drawn 27 of 29 we could have backed a loser before the race is even run, as who knows what track or draw bias there will be? Ascot is often a law unto itself.

But what we have in the selection is a horse that goes well at the track – he finished third here in a valuable 7f handicap, albeit off a 3lb lower mark, in July and was runner-up in his group (6th overall) here on Champions' Day in October – who acts on any ground, likes the trip and is fairly weighted. And Richard Hughes is just the jockey for this hold-up horse.

What seals the selection is his trainer David Barron is in good form, having won with Tres Coronas at Chester on Thursday and whose Norse Blues won the Thirsk Hunt Cup last weekend. Let's hope he is celebrating another big handicap winner come 4pm.

Earlier on the Ascot card, I wouldn't put anyone off having a couple of quid on Australia Day in the 2.05 and he would rate a small nibble at odds of around 8.0 upwards.

A win here would come via an unorthodox route, as only nine days ago he was bolting up in a handicap chase at Taunton. But he is a very versatile horse and a Flat handicap mark of 85 probably underestimates his raw ability.

His last run on the Flat, over 2m at Kempton last month, doesn't look that promising. But 1m4f on decent ground with forcing tactics is probably much more of his bag, and his wins in Spain last summer show he still has ability in this sphere.

And he would make short of work of these off a mark of 85 on his form three years ago; indeed, he is 10lb lower than when an excellent fourth in the Duke Of Edinburgh over course and distance in 2010 on fast ground.

As he is a trailblazer he also has some trading potential too. So back him pre-race and put in an in-running lay at the around the 3.0 mark.

The new jumps season sneaks back on the terrestrial radar with a couple of fearsomely difficult handicap hurdles from Haydock. I was half tempted by Art Professor at what is sure to be a massive price in the 1.50 as I think the step up to 3m on better ground could just bring out the best in him.

But it's too much of a guess, in truth, and the same applies to Street Entertainer in the 3.30 though David Pipe's 6yo does have the look of a job horse.

However, I'm happy to stick with Bertiewhittle and Australia Day. But tread carefully.

    ASCOT PLACEPOT
    ————————-

13:30- Jazz shaped with promise in a maiden at Newbury that has already thrown up three next-time-out winners and ought to go extremely close with the benefit of that experience behind him. In an ideal world we would also include Richard Hannon’s newcomer for a bit of insurance, but with some formidable contests to tackle later on the card we will save lines and bank on Jazz.

14:05- A tricky race to work out but the first horse we turn to is the Mark Johnston-trained Scatter Dice. He comes into this race on the back of a career-best effort behind two promising types at Salisbury and, having performed well on both starts here before, there is little reason to suspect he won’t put up a bold show. Ruscello would have been our second choice but he has been declared a non-runner so we will instead select Maria’s Choice from the in-form stable of Sir Michael Stoute. The four-year-old is lightly raced and open to improvement and is capable of making an impact on his seasonal return.

14:40- Main Sequence has some good form at the highest level and merits consideration. However, he is likely to carry plenty of units and, on Timeform ratings, doesn’t have as much in hand of the race-fit pair of Thomas Chippendale and Ektihaam as you might imagine. Both reappeared behind Al Kazeem at Sandown last month, with the former faring the best, and it could be worth banking on Sir Henry Cecil’s colt with the return to one and a half miles likely to suit.

15:15- Westwiththenight breezed to success at Doncaster on her reappearance, looking like an improved performer, and is well worth including in the Placepot. She will have to defy an 11 lb rise for that effortless victory, but she remains open to further improvement with champion jockey Richard Hughes once again taking the ride. She has a largely positive and progressive profile and rates as banker material to finish in the first three.

15:50- There will be no bankers in the final two legs as they look to be extremely tricky affairs. The first horse we will include in the Victoria Cup is Lightning Cloud. Kevin Ryan’s five-year-old has produced some good efforts over today’s C&D and he shaped nicely on his return at Thirsk last time, running right up to his best as he kept on strongly to finish third. Loving Spirit is another horse that has run well over C&D, narrowly beating Lightning Cloud to the runner-up spot on his final outing last year, and there was plenty to like about his reappearance at Kempton where he kept on well close home having been disadvantaged by the slow early pace. Provided he doesn’t find the ground too lively, Loving Spirit should be on the premises. The Irish challenger Jamesie ran some good races in defeat in Britain last year, notably when finishing runner-up at the Royal meeting, and he put up an encouraging display on his most recent run at Dundalk. He should once again give a good account of himself. Tartiflette was threatening to become a frustrating sort last year, often travelling well but not finding as much as appeared likely, but she won on her final outing of the season, carried on the winning trend on her return and looks primed to go well again with the big field and fast pace likely to suit.

16:25- Another fiendishly-difficult event to work out. School Fees justified support to score at Doncaster last time on her second start for Olly Stevens and the booking of Richard Hughes today is undoubtedly a positive. Apollo D’negro comes into this contest in good heart having looked better than ever when scoring on the all-weather at Kempton on Tuesday and the return to turf should not pose any problems for Clive Cox’s gelding. We will also include another last-time-out winner in the form of the John Mackie-trained Available who scored in first-time cheekpieces and ought to go well again if the headgear has the same impact this time.

    Selections:
    13:30- 7
    14:05- 3, 12
    14:40- 5
    15:15- 4
    15:50- 7, 8, 10, 14
    16:25- 1, 11, 17
