WE'RE counting down the days to the start of the Cheltenham Festival – and check out Milesey's day one preview.

Before that there are plenty of races to look and here are Milesy's thoughts for the day.

Wincanton 2.30
RUBEN COTTER 1.62
Was an eight-length winner over this 3m 1f trip last time out and was outstanding that day. Today has to defy a penalty if it’s going to take this race, what I fully expect this horse to do. It just looks too good for this field and has taken to fences really well.

Wincanton 3.00
IF IN DOUBT 3.1
Looks well treated on its handicap mark, won well last time out with AP on board.

Wincanton 4.40
LITTLE JIMMY 1.8
Off a good mark, so I’m in favour of this horse today rather then going with Sawpit Supreme. Little Jimmy has a penalty for last week's win, going for the treble today, the 2m trip will help him defy the rise. It’s a risk but it’s LITTLE JIMMY for me.

Carlisle 4.20
COVERHOLDER 3.2
Going for a six-timer today, I don’t see any horse in this field stopping COVERHOLDER from another win. Is up in weights again after its win eight days ago but it’s not going to be enough to stop him today.

Southwell 5.30
DEWALA 2.3
Trainer Michael Appleby has an outstanding strike rate here on the fibre sand, won last time out at the same distance of 1m 3f, scored over C&D last month and was 12 lengths clear that day so given a hefty rise for that performance today.

Wolverhampton 7.10
HILLBILLY BOY 1.71
Was second last time out to Hiddon Coin but was a clear second place when going for the hat-trick, the return to the polytrack today will help this horse and I believe it will bounce back from second last time out.

OUTSIDER OF THE DAY
———————

OSCAR ZULU in the 15.35 at Wincanton. This gelding was pulled-up behind Kilmurvy at Taunton last December. He had a chance four from home, but weakened quickly and his rider wisely called it a day.

I think this former Irish pointer will be better suited by the better ground today, and could go close at a big price. At present he is trading at 14.5 on the exchange.

Others at WOLVERHAMPTON I like the look of – 5.40: TOP BOY 2.18, 7.40: TRAVELLING 2.44, 8.10: KING GEORGE RIVER 2.14.

The 2013 Cheltenham Festival is nearly upon us, and with the finishing touches being applied to the potential stars of the show, flying machines like My Tent Or Yours, Simonsig, Hurricane Fly, Quevega, Pont Alexandre, Dynaste, Sprinter Sacre and Bobs Worth, it seems a perfect time to take the wraps off some antepost value prior to the main event.

Plenty of the bookmakers now have their ‘non runner no bet’ concessions firmly in place, so it’s time to get involved…

Much is made of the primeval roar that erupts from the Prestbury Park crowd when the tapes go up for the Festival opening Supreme Novices’ Hurdle (1.30pm, Tuesday), and there’s a fair chance many in the crowd will be willing on hot favourite My Tent Or Yours.

On the strength of his Betfair Hurdle win at Newbury he looks a formidable opponent, and in light of that achievement quite how he managed to get beaten at the same track at Christmas time at odds of 4/11 are a mystery, though the Heavy ground might have had something to do with it.

    Can he be beaten?

It’s well known this race has become something of a bloodbath where short-priced jollies are concerned, and my concern would be his ability to handle the unique demands of Cheltenham.

It’s one thing being able to look impressive at the likes of Ludlow, Ascot, Huntingdon and Newbury, but the danger is something might pick him off late home, as even over the minimum trip a very strong stayer is required to take this event.

My Tent Or Yours comes from a top yard and has experience of winning in a big field, but at a general 6/4 there’s plenty of formidable opposition.

For starters the principal Irish hope Jezki, who carries the same green and gold silks of owner JP McManus.

Wins at Naas (twice), Fairyhouse and Leopardstown mean he arrives with a 100% record over timber as well as a tall reputation, especially in light of the demolition job he carried out on the likes of Waaheb at Leopardstown at Christmas.

The concern with him would be the lack of a recent run, as by the time the Festival arrives he’ll have been off the track for 75 days.

Not that master trainer Jessica Harrington won’t have him primed to run the race of his life, but even so it might be a small pointer…

The main hope amongst the remaining six entries for Ireland’s champion trainer Willie Mullins appears to be Un Atout, another unbeaten hurdler for whom the sky could very well be the limit.

What’s not known where he’s concerned is how better ground will suit him, given that in three runs to date he has run only on Heavy.

Jeremy Scott’s Melodic Rendezvous has shortened considerably in the markets since seeing off the highly rated Puffin Billy at Exeter and must be a live contender, but also at a double figure price I’ll be very surprised if Cheltenham specialist Dodging Bullets doesn’t give us a serious run for our cash.

Fourth in the Triumph Hurdle 12 months ago trainer Paul Nicholls has deliberately kept him fresh for this assignment, and form figures of 4,1,1 at the track suggest he’ll be a live danger.

A breathing operation last summer seemed to do him a power of good, and he returned to Cheltenham in October a rejuvenated force, hacking up by eight lengths in the hands of Ruby Walsh.

That was followed by a game win at the same venue in November, beating the highly-rated River Maigue by a length and a half despite having to concede seven pounds!

He might only be five years of age but Nicholls then had no hesitation in throwing him in at the deep end, with a third placed finish behind Darlan and Raya Star in the Christmas Hurdle at Kempton the outcome.

With his breathing sorted and track and trip ideal it’s no surprise there’s been money around for him, and the 10/1 available each way with Betfred or Blue Square is the way to go.

Having thrown our hat into the ring for the opening race of the meeting, we’ll also try and find a solution to the last race of the 27, with the Johnny Henderson Grand Annual Chase rounding things off on the Friday.

This is always ultra competitive, but one I really like is Tom George’s fast improving chestnut gelding Rody.

A winner of three of his last four races, the form of his penultimate win (26 Dec) at Wincanton has been franked in style on two occasions by runner up Rouge Et Blanc, while last time out Rody beat Eastlake, Kapga De Cerisy and The Chazer at Warwick.

Eastlake has since bolted up at Sandown Park, Kapga De Cerisy has won at twice at Sandown, and The Chazer hosed up at Doncaster.

The form is working out you might say!

With that in mind Rody could be a bit of value at 14’s each way with Ladbrokes.

    Good luck!

    Cheltenham Festival Antepost:

Tues – Supreme Novices’ Hurdle – Dodging Bullets (each way) @ 10/1 (Betfred or Blue Square)

Fri – Johnny Henderson Grand Annual Chase – Rody (each way) @ 14/1 (Ladbrokes)

      Cheltenham Gold Cup Betting 2013

The bookies’ current ante-post favourite is Bobs Worth, priced at around 4.0 (that’s 3/1 in fractional odds). It’s been heavily tipped my many experts and is sure to go off as pre-race favourite, however it wouldn’t be the first time that the fave has been beaten in the Gold Cup, so what of the alternatives?

Well, Sir Des Champs is also fancied by some, and certainly has the class to beat the field, but can he beat a field of this quality? Silviniaco Conti and last year’s favourite Long Run are next in the betting and could threaten to cause an upset.

      WINCANTON 3.00
      —————

Tiger O’toole is a useful hurdler whose jumping has often let him down over fences, most recently at Wetherby in November. Never a threat back over timber in valuable contest at Ffos Las recently so has a bit to prove.

If In Doubt split subsequent winners when runner-up on hurdling debut at Folkestone in December and duly went one better at Towcester the following month. Opening mark very fair with more to come.

Chesil Beach Boy thrived last term, landing hat-trick of C&D handicaps before good fifth in Imperial Cup. Better was expected under this rider at Taunton last month, and a visor isn’t an obvious move (free-goer).

Jumps Road won a Ffos Las novice hurdle back in 2011, and back to that level when landing a C&D handicap last month (front 2 well clear). Unexposed at 2m, but 7 lb rise demands more.

The Pier has just a maiden win in Ireland to his name so far but leaves impression there’s a bigger performance in him, fourth in a strong Ludlow handicap in January. 2m looked an insufficient test last week.

Suerte Al Salto is a Fontwell bumper winner who shaped promisingly when runner-up in pair of novice hurdles in November. Added to sequence of seconds in a C&D handicap last month, but didn’t look easiest of rides.

Dragon’s Den won over C&D and Exeter last term. Shaped quite well when fifth at latter track on reappearance but unable to fully build on that since, though drying ground will aid his cause.

Mighty Monty was much improved in cheekpieces when runner-up either side of a victory at Uttoxeter in November 2011. Rather hit and miss since, but given a break and yard going pretty well now.

      1. If In Doubt
      2. Suerte Al Salto
      3. Dragon’s Den

VERDICT : If In Doubt looked value for extra when winning a Towcester novice in January, and looks to have been let into handicaps on a good mark with the prospect of more to come. He’s selected, though Suerte Al Salto is a live threat if proving more straightforward, with Dragon’s Den interesting at longer odds on drying ground.

    • Avatar of Milesey

Oscar Zulu makes plenty of appeal based on the impression he left in bumpers for James Motherway, and he shaped much better than the bare result in a bog at Taunton on his debut for Philip Hobbs in December. On that occasion he travelled smoothly in a dispute of the lead for a long way, and was looked after when getting tired and blundering 3 out. The Hobbs team are in very good form at present, and Oscar Zulu is capable of leaving that form well behind now.

Brinestine would be a danger on his Flat form, and has been talked of in glowing terms by Paul Nicholls, but he took a nasty fall when beaten on his hurdles bow in the Chatteris Fen at Huntingdon, and it’s possible that will have left a mark. Titus Mills was behind The Stout Italian at Ludlow, where the slow pace would have suited, and he needs to do more, while the others have yet to achieve a great deal, for all a few are unexposed. Backing Oscar Zulu is undoubtedly something of a risk, but he is certainly well up to winning a novice hurdle, and looks too big in the early betting.

Wincanton has a couple of races with interesting and unexposed handicappers: there’s David Pipe’s Royal Peak in the opener, but without the benefit of seeing how that one fares in the market throughout the day a more solid proposition is represented by If In Doubt in the 15:00. He’s been handed an opening mark of 126 by the handicapper, but the nature of his win at Towcester last time suggests he could be a lot better than that. In a well-run contest that compared very favourably with other races on the card in terms of times, If In Doubt pulled clear with second-favourite Viva Steve, ultimately beating that one by an easy one and a half lengths. Admittedly, Viva Steve didn’t exactly do his bit for the form next time, though the impression left on the clock by If In Doubt that day certainly shouldn’t be forgotten ahead of his handicap debut.

I thought Daryl Jacob was going to hold on, he tried, but it got away and the win got away there. TERRIBLE start when a odds on favourite goes down first race, it’s a sign of whats to come next week ;) ;) MY TENT OR YOURS, is it going to give me a good start to cheltenham, or is my e/w on Dodging Bullets going to look good.

It was closer then last time out, wasn’t the 6 lengths it was that time, it was a photo but JACK DAWKINS on the far side always had it, just always gets the better of GOLDMADCHEN.

Milesey, whats the diff between Polytrack/sand? at Wovves/Southwell

  27. Avatar of Milesey
    Milesey 12 years ago

Polytrack is made up of polypropylene fibres, recycled rubber and silica sand coated in wax. It is installed at both Lingfield and Wolverhampton racecourses and is also used on the Epsom training gallop, the Newmarket artificial training tracks and several trainers have it on their private gallops. Many tracks in the USA are in the process of installion Polytrack, or similar tracks, as the old dirt tracks are unforgiving.

Fibresand is also sand and polyproylene fibres but is softer and therefore has greater “kickback”. It is more inclined to form lumps and does not cope well with very cold weather.

Ok Milesey..thanks for that. So for a horse is there a big difference between the 2 surfaces although having “similarities” Do they generally either prefer or dislike one or another similarly to heavy or fast ground??

    HORSE RACING TIPS

    FRIDAY 8TH MARCH 2013

    ————————————

    ————————————
    Ayr 2.10
    ZUIDER ZEE
Form of this horse is very solid at the moment, been running so well on the flat, and on debut last time out over hurdles put in a mighty performance, the only negative is the drop back to 2m today, i don’t see it as a problem.

    Leicester 3.35
    RAVETHEBRAVE
Tougher race today then last time out, but should be well upto the task after it’s chase debut win last time out.

    Sandown 4.00
    COCKNEY TRUCKER
Seems to have been given a new lease of life, is better off today in the ratings.

    Ayr 4.55
    SEE WHAT HAPPENS
Looks very well rated today on handicap debut and caught my eye here as the one to beat in this race, has been treated very lenient with an opening mark of 120.

    Wolverhampton 6.10
    DANZIGER
Proven over C&D, is turned out today under a penalty but is in really good form, scored the hat-trick at track last friday and this horse will just continue to progress.

    HORSE RACING TIPS

    FRIDAY 8TH MARCH 2013

    Friday’s card at Jebel Ali…

Not too many that can be considered in the opening maiden at 10:30 and I think it could be worth opposing the likely favourite, Bravo Youmzain, with Price Is Truth who will be making his dirt debut but should relish the surface if his pedigree is anything to go by. He was an expensive purchase for Godolphin, racing three times for Mahmood Al Zarooni last year, his best effort coming when fourth to Correspondent at Lingfield in a race that threw plenty of subsequent winners. He made an encouraging debut for this yard, running on strongly into third behind Maltese Cat, and whilst this shorter trip is a slight concern, he should be sharper for the run and the stiff finish will be very much in his favour. Bravo Youmzain is the pick on ratings but he’s been punching above his weight this season and it’s hard to know whether he is as good as he was last year for Marco Botti, worth opposing on that basis.

Dhruba Selvaratnam has hit form in no uncertain terms in recent weeks, four of his last eight runners hitting the target with another couple finishing second, and his Momaris looks to have solid claims in the 12:00. Momaris is the only one of these with any potential remaining, relatively lightly raced after just the seven starts, and still going the right way having got off the mark in November and run good races in defeat subsequently. His third to Latkhaf last time strikes as being solid form, certainly in the context of this race, and with the added encouragement of him holding his form whilst his stable have largely struggled, he could even improve again.

It’s a minor concern that Interpret has been off the track since December but most of his maiden form is very strong and he can make his opening mark look lenient when lining up in the concluding handicap at 13:00. He is bred to be useful being a half-brother to the Dubai World Cup winner, Invasor, and has made a promising start to his career, second to Dubai Iconic (has since won a handicap off a mark of 85) and Surfer (runner-up in a Group 2 last time) on his first 2 starts before winning easily here last time. The race he won was weak to say the least but it gave him vital experience on this surface and he should be well capable of making an impact off a mark of 83.

Back Price Is Truth in the 10:30
    Back Momaris in the 12:00
    Back Interpret in the 13:00
