THIS is a race to tread carefully in – a big field all tightly handicapped with plenty of scope for trouble in-running. But if you can find a winner the chances are it will be a big price and you won’t forget it in a hurry.
I’m looking for a bit of value here so I’ve picked two out at big prices from opposite ends of the weights.
2.40 – The Coral Cup
– Hurdles race
– Run over 2 miles 5 furlongs
– Notoriously competitive and difficult to find a winner
– Last 10 favourites have all been beaten
Each way selection: Volnay De Thaix
This one has more than a touch of class about him but that is reflected in his position at the top of the weights. Nicky Henderson is using Peter Carberry as the jockey because he gets a weight allowance of 3 lbs that might help to improve the competitiveness of the horse in this tough handicap. Sometimes class can tell in a handicap race and although there might be one or two sneaky ones in the field that have been plotted for this all season I expect Volnay De Thaix to travel well and hopefully outrun his surprisingly big price.
Each way selection: Daneking
Daneking’s form is a little bit up and down but he sneaks in here at the bottom of the weights. He clearly isn’t a strong fancy for the Mullins stable but he has Ruby on board which has to be a positive sign and I must admit I have been swayed by the price of this one as much as anything else. Low weight, Mullins and Walsh, chunky ech way price…. Rude not to have a couple of quid each way.
Another one that caught the eye was the totally unexposed Aux Ptits Sans who has hasn’t been raced in the UK or Ireland at all since joining Paul Nicholls and has clearly been put aside for this but I’m not sure I can be recommending a bet at prices as short as 8-1 with little or no form to go on.
Plinth for Aidan O’Brien is another interesting runner who hasn’t been completely disgraced in his last two runs in Grade 1 company in Ireland and he might be more likely to find his level here. At odds of 25-1 he is also a tempting each way outsider.
Betting suggestions:
Volnay De Thaix – 0.5 points each way at 20-1 with Totesport
Daneking – 0.5 points each way at 20-1 with Totesport
