MAMA AFRICA (4.30) has cost punters a packet but it could be payback time at Thirsk on Tuesday.

The David Barron-trained filly’s record is a pretty depressing  0-18 but the application of cheekpieces last time almost worked the oracle as Mama Africa was only denied a neck by in-form Whatsthemessage over course and distance 10 days ago.

It was three lengths back to yesterday’s Ayr scorer Size Matters and stall one is perfect for a horse that likes to race up with the pace.

Rosa Ryan and Totally Magic are closely matched on their Thirsk run here over seven furlongs and Rosa Ryan’s Beverley victory has been boosted by the subsequent successes of placed horses Relight My Fire and El Principe.

Dellaguista has her first run for Tim Easterby since the filly’s transfer from William Haggas.

HAWRIDGE FLYER (3.45) ran a cracker at Chepstow when third to John Gosden’s Zenon and Dark Pearl and should handle soft ground at Ffos Las.

The winner came out and won a competitive Haydock handicap, while Dark Pearl chased home Godolphin’s unbeaten Royal Associate and Niblawi in a Class 3 handicap at Ascot.

Ancient Longing made a pleasing enough debut at Salisbury when fifth to Torcello but that didn’t look a strong maiden.

Uttoxeter hurdle winner Still Believing could have a big role to play if the ground is testing and Evan Williams does so well at the Welsh track.

STERNRUBIN (4.45) lacks a change of gear but this 1m 6f handicap is likely to develop into a war of attrition.

Philip Hobbs’ dual-purpose gelding was travelling well in the lead turning into the straight at Sandown and probably should have kicked on as he was done for speed in the final furlong. Sternrubin found only Swashbuckle too quick at Salisbury on his previous start and this doesn’t look quite so stiff a task.

Sir Mark Prescott’s three-year-old Veiled Secret hacked up from a modest bunch at Yarmouth, making all, but Lingfield winner Thistimenextyear also goes from the front which may compromise both their chances.

Catcher On The Go ploughed through the mud here to beat a couple of maidens rated 79 and 80. Runner-up Waterville Dancer was also beaten by Mobait at Salisbury and it may not be the strongest formline.

On the evening card at Nottingham, DEINONYCHUS (6.25) is my idea of a solid each-way bet at around 5-1.

This will be the gelding’s first try at 1m 6f but there are grounds for thinking he’ll stay all right following his second to Compton Mill over 1m 4f at Leicester, plus another runner-up spot at Newmarket (1m 5f) when trained previously by William Knight. Deinonychus scored at Nottingham over 10 furlongs (heavy) 12 days ago and a 3lb rise is negated by Ben Robinson’s 5lb claim.

The three-year-old duo Melinoe and Master Archer look the big dangers.

Morning Billy Boy. Enable or Winter you ask? I love them both to bits and they have been good money-spinners for me this season, but Gosden filly would get the nod on an easy surface
