BOOKIES were hammered on Thursday as the Queen's horse won the Ascot Gold Cup but Ladbrokes were happy to celebrate at the Royal meeting.
Her Majesty's horse Estimate took the feature race of Ladies' Day to the roars of the packed stands at Ascot – and millions of viewers and punters around the country.
It cost the bookmaking industry millions but Ladbrokes hope it will trigger a wave of racing goodwill that will help pay for the hit.
David Williams of Ladbrokes said: “Racing has a priceless ability to throw up some dream results and we're happy to join in the celebrations. “Sure, we lost a packet on the race but the day will go down in history and more than pay for itself in upbeat coverage over the days, weeks and months to come.
“Sometimes we need to look beyond the balance sheet and think about the marketing potential. Estimate's win could be the best news for racing – and betting – in a very long time.”
Our tipster Winning Insights put up four tips and two provided each-way returns. Moment in The Sun (12-1) was second in the 7.15 at Lingfield and Phoenix Clubs came third in the 5.20 at Ripon, coming in at 6-1.
Here are his thoughts on those runners:
Moment in The Sun (given excellent ride by 5lb apprentice and found one too good on the day when caught in final furlong).
Phoenix Clubs (looked badly hampered at messy start but came through pack and should win soon),
Size (Unplaced 4-5 fav – disappointing, never travelled too well, wanted gap on inside but didn't get it and switched too late to make impact. Will bounce back).
Loyal Royal (Unplaced 25-1 – gamble of the day, not so far behind at finish when eased, worth watching back at Wolverhampton or with slight handicap easing, should be good for good price place soon.)
Today's tips
Goodwood 7.55 – Novirak (0.5pt ew) selected on basis of stepping up in trip and relatively unexposed 5yr old. Duke of Clarence possibly main danger.
Newmarket 8.05 – Bronze Prince (0.5pt ew) looks overpriced for drop in class and recent competitor form working out.

ASCOT
14:30 – JOYEUSE (4.5) paddypower
As a half-sister to outstanding Frankel, all eyes were on her in Lingfield maiden (6f, good to soft; wore hood) on debut and she ran out a stylish winner; siblings also include smart pair Noble Mission and Bullet Train; looks a bright prospect; exciting contender.
15:05- HILLSTAR (8.0) paddypower
Built on debut promise when winning Leicester maiden (soft) last October; good second in a couple of traditionally strong 3yo handicaps (1m2f, good to firm; favourite both times) this term and that form looks solid; more needed to go one better at this level but that’s not impossible, as he looks the type to prove better than a handicapper and this longer trip could eke out more.
15:45 – PAVLOSK (9.0) paddypower
Won 7f newcomers race at Newbury (good to soft) in April and in another class to her rivals in 1m Listed race at York (soft; led over 2f out) in May; very different ground likely and far better company but she’s an exciting prospect and form is already within striking distance of best of these fillies.
16:25 – DICK DOUGHTYWYLIE (11.0) paddypower
Lightly raced 5yo who has found Group company too much in two starts this season but ran respectably, particularly at Chester latest; a literal reading of that form suggests he’s on a fair mark back handicapping; trainer-jockey combination won last two runnings of this; shortlisted.
17:00 – ROYAL SKIES (12.0) paddypower
Raised his game markedly this month to win handicaps on good to firm over 1m2f at Pontefract and 1m4f at Musselburgh; there was only one other finisher in latter but his romp time before confirms he’s useful; good chance he’ll stay beyond 1m4f; withdrawn from the 1m4f handicap yesterday; one of the better form chances and yard has fine record in this race.
17:35 – JACKS REVENGE (17.0) paddypower
Hold-up horse who will need luck in running, and may get going too late, but was second of 20 over 7f at Doncaster in November and this track is stiffer; has now run well in defeat in big-field handicaps such as this on last four starts, and could come on for close fifth of 22 on March’s 1m reappearance.
Just noticed this post, got 3 of them on myself so fingers crossed!
@Winning Insights cheers for the points you’ve added to your tips for the day hope they go well. Unlucky with Size last night a lot more was expected by many and congrats on the two EW’s :-)
Did you have a good day on the horses yesterday
14:30 @ Ascot
Extremely hard to pick between Joyeuse and Sandiva so I recommend a reverse forecast between the 2
Whats the difference between reverse forcast and forcast
Homicide, reverse forecast gives you first, second in any order.
Ok and Im guessing you have to double your stake to do it
Homicide, yes you would have to do that to cover both ways.
joyese has only won a maiden.
dont get caught up in the frankels sister hype
everyone seems to think its between her and the fahey nag.
this looks a race for ew value.
there are about 16 horses with winning form.
nightmare race to bet on
Jasper, all but one of the 11 winners contested a maiden last time out with six winning (Cuis Ghaire is the only winner to have won a Group race beforehand) and six winners were having just their second career start.

Get in HILLSTAR
Took Thuderball £5 each way in the 5.35. Seems to be 100/1 with bet365. Its won in big fields before- once for me at 25/1 and once at 20/1 when I didn’t back it. Okay- this is as big as they come but its as good a chance as any in this cavalry charge.
Wish I put more on HILLSTAR now ;)
Selection Bronze Prince now a non runner in the 8.05 Newmarket
Does it take long to learn the basics of horse racing or is it more like a lottery, hit and hope sort of thing?
I prefer the Irish lottery- too many imponderables in horse racing- not least is the jockey actually trying to win. On the evidence of a few I’ve backed today clearly not!
John, you can try to do away with the ‘hit and hope’ aspect as you put it, by analysis, playing the long game and also playing the percentage game. Same goes with all gambling. That’s why for me I prefer non favourites each way, saving stakes if they are placed and getting decent returns with the winners. Bookies actually don’t like each way bets that much, they prefer punters chucking it all on short priced favourites that get turned over. Race selection is also really important. Like this week, Ascot, very competitive and big fields, make it pretty difficult. Same applies to Cheltenham and all the big festivals. You make the same money winning a 4/1 class 6 handicap at Southwell as you do a 4/1 Group 1 at Royal Ascot, but in many respects it’s actually less difficult!
My local bookie doesn’t like people doing each way bets at 4 or 5/1 as they say they don’t make much out of it but i’ve noticed ALOT of favorites getting beat by big money non favorites so wondered is it normal for that to happen, cheers for the reply
About 70% of races are won by the first three in the betting so non favourites winning by and large are not big prices, and big priced winners are therefore much harder to find. But due to large field sizes at say Ascot, prices are higher. The other day for example my selection Stirring Ballad started 10/1 co favourite, a rare sight! Winner was 33/1, 2nd 40/1, 3rd 50/1!
Those in the 4/1 to 8/1, sometimes higher kind of range are interesting, if analysis shows they have a decent chance and may be overpriced.
