Kazak in the 20:30 at Sandown.
This colt finished seventh to Matrooh at Doncaster last month. He missed the break, but ran on strongly in the closing stages and was not beaten all that far.
He appears to be improving with racing, and could go close at a big price in this interesting maiden.
At present he is trading at 13.0 on the exchange.

It’s the jumps fixture at Ffos Las that first comes under our attention, with their three-mile handicap chase at 16:35 the focus. As a Class 3 containing a fair number with recent winning form, this rates as an above-average summer contest; even so, there is one with a stand-out profile. Royale Knight is a most progressive handicapper in the care of Richard Newland, whose charges are generally worth siding with for a while once they get on a roll. That certainly applies to Royale Knight, who won in such an authoritative manner at Kelso last time that a penalty shouldn’t be enough to stop him following up. There’s a case for him being closer to even-money, so you needn’t fear getting involved at current odds.

The 0-60 five-furlong handicap at Thirsk, due off at 14:40, is not a race to get heavily involved in, but See Vermont could be worth chancing at a suitably big price. He hasn’t run at five furlongs on good going or firmer since 2011, but is well in here on the pick of his efforts under such conditions then. He raced only on soft ground last year, running respectably second time, and was well backed on his polytrack debut/reappearance at Wolverhampton six weeks ago. See Vermont ran as if needing the race that day but showed signs of promise and hopefully will be sharper today.

THIRSK PLACEPOT
————————-
14:10 – With plenty of the principles seemingly having a draw advantage here it looks advisable to stick with those at the head of the market, beginning with Tanseeb who seemed to find six furlongs on testing ground a bit of a stretch at York last time, weakening late on. The return to the minimum distance will suit and he has plum draw against the rail to aid him, so he should be in the shake-up. It may be wise to take a back-up selection so the Ralph Beckett-trained Weisse Socken, who was heavily supported in the market when making a promising debut at Windsor, is also included. Another with the benefit of a high draw she shouldn’t be far away.
14:40 – Steelcut comes into this on a very feasible mark on past turf form and although he doesn’t appear the force of old, his latest effort on the all-weather suggested he was in good order. With a good draw in stall ten to help, this admirable sort should be in the money on his 100th career start. To be on the safe side, we will back him up with Rio’s Girl, who suggested she was returning to form at Hamilton with a keeping on third a week ago, and runs off the same mark which saw her get her head in-front at Carlisle last season.
15:15 – Rapscallion Deep probably didn’t beat much when landing his maiden at Ripon last month, yet he couldn’t have done it any better. Still lightly-raced, Kevin Ryan’s gelding should be competitive in this type of event and with improvement highly likely, he should be on the premises. As back-up due to the sheer competitive nature of the race add another in the shape of Milkwood, who put together some admirable performances last season. His return effort at York last month should have blown the cobwebs away and he ought to be involved.
15:50 – Another fiendishly difficult sprint handicap for us to assess and once again it looks advisable to go with a couple in our bid to reach the latter races unscathed. With very few of these getting their head in-front regularly, it looks a case of sticking with those that know what it’s about, starting with Hab Reeh, who has been running better than his form figures suggest of late over 7f and weakening late on; he ought to appreciate the lesser demands of this. Lady Kildare suggested her turn was not far away with an encouraging return to action at Catterick last time and is not one to dismiss lightly.
16:25 – A less demanding task than any of those above, in which it is difficult to get away from Ingleby Angel who won as he liked at Redcar last time. The 6 lb penalty should not inconvenience him if turning up in the same mood.
17:00 – The smallest field of the day, but arguably one of the more intriguing line-ups, with several arriving in good order. However in our bid to keep the lines down we will take a risk by banking upon Ajraam, who was a good winner of the Wood Ditton in April. He should be sharper for that experience and could improve now contesting handicaps.

GREYHOUND RACING
——————————-
Hove and Monmore provide the open-race hors d’oeuvres before the cut and thrust of the Derby second round kicks in at Wimbledon on Friday and Saturday, the action Thursday live on RPGTV (Channel 212)…
Most valuable race is at Monmore where a 630m final see Aghaburren Paddy (20:42) try to repeat his heat win. Charlie Lister’s dog held on well in his qualifier and same tactics again could see him strike i.e off the front. Expect a better start from Joscar which could leave strong Afew Dollarsmore chopped for room inside.
On to Hove where Your A Champ (20:18) will again try to prove she’s the track star now. She’ll soon be blazing a trail here having got back on track last week and will be one for the money-buyers, although keep an eye on improving Dacent Rodgers.
After Liz (21:06) looks a potential improver with just a debut victory on her card and a decent enough trial ahead of this maiden open to strike, while Princess Pati (21:24) is above ready to step up in class and her early pace will be tough to hold in a bitches’ open.
Droopys Casspi (21:40) is a decent sprinter who will soon be forcing the issue stepping up in distance to 475m with a fast start set to give him the advantage in the short run to the bend.
Slippery Patch (21:56) ran on well enough last week on his Hove return and could take advantage of a terrific draw inside. This is a track he tends to run well at, as does standing dish Malbay Phanter (22:11). He’s a real star over 475m here and will again keep wide and power down the back straight after getting no luck at Wimbledon in the Derby heats. Airtech Alfie is improving after a break and looks the value alternative.
Tibetan Skies (22:26) has been thrilling clockwatchers of late and his strong running style may again may hay in the lucky last.
On to Friday and sharing the stage with Wimbledon will be Romford and their usual cluster of open races.
Billymatt (19:31) should get back on track in the opening sprint after missing it last week, while Jaytee Thunder (20:18) looks a pup going places after last week’s win and another show of early pace and likely improvement might seal the deal again.
Bridge Ruth (20:34) had no luck at Wimbledon in the Derby heats but is interesting up in trip here and could out-stay likely leader Rays Request.
Droopys Quincy (20:50) will love the trip and draw in the puppy open, while Rathanny Annie’s (21:06) early dash could soon make hay in the bitches’ contest.
Droopys Xavier (21:24) wasn’t disgraced in the heats so could strike gold in the Doug Tyler Summer Cup final with the inside draw a real help if he can worry the likes of Head Iton Tom and Airforce Roger into the turn.
Fabulous Agenda (21:40) is fancied to get first run on Guinness Sky in a terrific duel over 400m, while Sharons Return (22:11) has scope for improvement after just two races back following a layoff and might well reverse recent form in a cracking event.
Lenson Pele (22:26) can kick fellow earlybird Bridge Jane into tough in their intriguing 575m clash, while the lucky last vote goes the way of impressive Coventry winner Aayamzalad (22:40)

One thing i’m finding tough to read are the form guides they have in bookies, is there anywhere that helps complete novices understand them better?

what don’t you understand John ?
Milesey
Well with regard to Priceless Art, you mentioned “well beaten at 8-1 behind Stonethrower when he was fourth of 5” what does that mean?
Means that he was well beaten in his last race when he went off at 8/1, was 4th out of 5 runners……… a race in which stonethrower won.
Milesey
Cheers for that Milesey, as Mr F would say judge a teams scoring form on it’s last 3 to 5 games, is it just the same with horses or more complicated than that?
More complicated then that i’m afraid, if it wins 4 races on the spin, then it’s going to get harder and harder each time it comes out for the handicapper will get it, and soon it will be handicapped enough to stop the run, but then you have horses who are well handicapped coming back down to a handicap mark where it might have won before.
Tracks come into contention aswell, might be great on the all weather, but on turf absolute shocking, distances, ground going, jockey weight allowances, filly allowance, first run for a new yard, headgear on, mouth tie, speed ratings, angles into races, may have lost last time out, but to whom did it lose to, what has that horse done since winning ? may have met a better horse that day, yes previous races of cause, but it may have finished last for it came out of the stalls 10 lengths behind, but had a good turn of speed in the last 3 furlongs.
Milesey
Your not wrong about it being complicated then, just because it’s well backed doesn’t mean much then i take it?
It does, you have to keep an eye on the market, people don’t chuck thousands on a horse for nothing, always a reason why it’s being backed in and being gambled on, look in depth and you will see the reason, could be running off the same handicap mark as it won 5 races 2 years ago, dropped down in class, the market leaders could have more weight on them, many factors to look at…….. maybe the market leaders just have no value in them so people are putting on other runners.

Hi Milesy what causes the non runners, also is there a way to predict who they gonna be?
Horses are entered into races weeks/months before, so the ground may change, they may have entered their horse for the event on soft ground, but the track is now good to firm, as in the case of the derby, many entrants entered thinking it would be soft ground, which firmed up and wasn’t watered by the clerk………… then of cause it can go the other way and the track could be a slog in the mud.
Horses that have double entries, and they decide to take the horse to the other track, may be entered at bath on tuesday and newmarket on wednesday and they decide to take it to newmarket therefore it’s a non runner on the tuesday. May have not travelled well to the track, may have had a terrible run out that morning so they decide against running it, may have been injured a day before, may have run the day before, some horses especially on the all weather tracks do back to back runs, but some with back to back entries may pull it out of the next days race.
many many factors……………. you can’t predict how a horse is going to wake up in the morning. or the british weather either.
