Sometimes in this game you have to hold your hands up when you get it wrong and today was unfortunately one of those days.
I was completely wrong with my comments on Roger Varians Robert Walpole. I didn’t think he would come on for his previous run.. well not to the extent he showed today anyway. He fluffed the start and still managed to win with plenty in hand. That horse has went from me not being fussed on it to going in the tracker. The unpredictability of racing eh?
Then we have the other side of the coin. I’ve absolutely no idea what jockey J F Egan was thinking today with the ride he gave our selection. I’m all for front running tactics. When they work you look a top jockey when they don’t… well you can look a bit silly and that’s exactly what happened today.
I don’t believe the horse wasn’t travelling and I simply feel Egan decided to go for home 3/4f out. A strange, strange decision as the horse was running on the spot half way down the straight and was very quickly eaten up by the pack. Even more disappointing as I tipped it up at 8s each way and it was backed into 10/3 at which I felt a bit optimistic about its chances… to place at least!
Tomorrow's another day and another roll of the dice. I’ve a single selection from Leicester that I expect to go close under jockey Paddy Brennan.
2:40 Leicester
Before we talk form, I’m delighted that jockey Paddy Brennan is the man on board my selection on Friday. I think his style of riding will suite Jacamar massively and enhance his chances of hitting the line infront.
Jacamar is a horse who’s taken well to fences and this field looks more on the easier side than what he’s been running against recently.
The most notable piece of information is the fact he’s now dropped to a mark which is only 1lb higher when winning at Kempton on Boxing Day where he beat Nicky Henderson’s Mister Coffey who’s went on to be a consistent sort.
I think if he can run to anything of that level he’ll be hard to beat.
Good luck!
