ON SATURDAY it's 2,000 Guineas day at Newmarket and also the final day of the Punchestown festival over in Ireland.
There isn't a whole lot that jumps out at me over there at a festival that I have struggled with over the years for a variety of reasons but there is one good value each way bet that I have picked out and there are two that I think are worth back at Newmarket too.
2.55pm Newmarket
This has the makings of a good race although CORONET is a class above everything else in the race and should be capable of winning this if she turns up in form and ready to go. She was runner up in much better races than this last year and won a Group 2 race first time out last season at York. I expect her to be gambled on before the off and to win this.
3.35 Newmarket – 2,000 Guineas
The first Classic of the season is the 2,000 Guineas and this year there is no obvious standout favourite for the race. The two main Coolmore contenders Ten Sovereigns and Magna Grecia both have good form although they are coming from quite different routes. Ten Sovereigns was a top class sprinter in his first season and now steps up in trip with question marks over whether he wants as far as a mile. Magna Grecia has solid form in the book without being breathtaking. AL HILALEE is one that I am going to have a small each way interest on. He hasn't done anything spectacular on the track in his two runs to date but the form is reasonable and he is open to plenty of improvement for his three year old season as a colt bred by Dubawi. The Godolphin operation decided to supplement him for this race at a significant cost so they must be fairly hopeful and he has William Buick in the saddle which is always a bonus. At fairly big prices I think he is worth a small each way bet in the hope that he justifies the lofty ambitions that his connections have for him.
5.35pm Punchestown
CANARDIER is the one over in Ireland that I think can't be allowed to run without some each way backing. The horse is ultra-consistent and ran very well at Cheltenham but was only put up by 1lb in the handicap. This race isn't as competitive despite the large number of runners and with some bookies offering 6 places each way we simply have to keep Canardier onside.
