3.05 Paddy Power Stayers' Hurdle
Thursday 18 March | Age: 4yo+ | Prize: £325,000
The Stayers’ Hurdle – formerly known as the World Hurdle – has been the feature at the Cheltenham Festival since 2005 and was first run in 1912. It's run over three miles on the New Course at Cheltenham.
Voice of Value's Tips
This looks like an absolute beezer of a race. Thyme Hill has had to come out through injury which is a shame but we still have Paisley Park, Sire Du Berlais, The Storyteller, Vinndication, last year's winner Lisnogar Oscar and the list goes on and on.
A few people have said that they think it isn't a great race but I really like the look of it.
What I do have up my sleeve is a filthy little each way bet on Sire Du Berlais advised back in January in my ante post column at 9/1. Well done to those of you who took that bit of value because it now leaves us ahead of the game and I think we can throw another one into the mix.
Paisley Park is a worthy favourite based on his win two years ago and his performances this season, especially his last run at Ascot which was impressive.
I wonder though whether that race might leave its mark because he had to work hard to hit the front at the end. I'm already taking him on each way with Sire Du Berlais and I am also going to have an each way punt on THE STORYTELLER.
He is a class act over both hurdles and fences and although his hurdles rating is lower than his chase rating he was mugged in the Pertemps last year by Sire Du Berlais and has had a good season since, running well in a Grade 1 chase most recently at the Dublin racing festival.
He is of course a former festival winner in 2018 too and loves it here. I think he will be ridden quietly out the back by Keith Donoghue and then pick them off on the final half circuit. He looks too big a price for me at 10-1 with extra places on offer now too.
Voice of Value's Stayers’ Hurdle Tip
- The Storyteller 2pt ew at 10-1 with Ladbrokes, Coral, SkyBet (all 4 places)
- Already advised: Sire Du Berlais ew at 9-1 antepost
Alan Thomson's Tips
Six second-season hurdlers have won the last seven renewals, so I’m a bit gutted original fancy Thyme Hill is missing.
That should leave the door open for 2019 winner PAISLEY PARK to re-gain his crown after last year’s flop. He produced a trademark flying finish to catch Thyme Hill at Ascot and although habitually hitting a flat-spot in his races, Paisley Park should prove too strong up the hill for Sire Du Berlais and The Storyteller, first and second in last year’s Pertemps Network Final.
The Storyteller turned that form around when they filled the places behind front-running Flooring Porter in the Leopardstown Christmas Hurdle. Last year’s winner Lisnagar Oscar won’t flinch if this develops into a real slogfest.
Thommo's Stayers’ Hurdle Tip
- Paisley Park 2/1 (Casumo)
