4.50 Mrs Paddy Power Mares' Chase
Friday 18 March | Age: 4yo+ | Prize: £67,524
This is the second running of this race at the Cheltenham Festival, adding yet another Mares' race to the meeting.
Mrs Paddy Power Mares' Chase Tips
The Mares’ Chase is having its second race since becoming a race at the Cheltenham Festival, and though it’s a good thing for the breeding side of the game, it’s not really a betting race for me.
I can’t really get my head around what has the best chance of winning, as I’m convinced by all of the leading contenders, and the horses who are priced up at EW prices, they don’t appeal to me either.
However, ELIMAY went down fighting in this race last year, being beaten by Colreevy, who went on to frank the form when winning a Grade 1 at Punchestown, beating Monfish and Envoi Allen over 3m. Based on that piece of form, you’d have to say she’s the one to beat, but she hasn’t exactly been impressive in this year’s campaign. She was very poor on seasonal reappearance, where she was heavily beaten by ZAMBELLA. She was then beat by MOUNT IDA at Fairyhouse, but that was a close race, and the form could easily be reversed between them. She is the current favourite, but I wouldn’t be convinced by her profile, and I think she could potentially be outstayed up the hill.

Mount Ida won the Kim Muir last year, so we know for a fact she is a strong stayer and handles the track. People will have problems with the fact she can sometimes jump out to her right, but it doesn’t seem all that hazardous, and I’ve seen horses go much more violently to the sides than Mount Ida. She managed to beat Elimay like I previously alluded to, and was carrying 3lbs more, which isn’t the case today. Arguably the one to beat.
CONCERTISTA brings good festival form to the table, being a runner-up on two occasions and winning the other from three runs at the Cheltenham Festival. She has only run twice over fences, and that is a concern if I was a backer, as she is still inexperienced against this field, and over stiff fences on a demanding track like Cheltenham you’d have to be worried. If she stays on her feet and has a good round of jumping, she probably is the class horse in the race.
