RACE five on day one is the Mares hurdle and we yet again have to start with Willie Mullins who has also dominated this race with eight wins from only nine runnings of this race.

He has won it the last eight years, six times with Quevega and once with Glens Melody when Annie Power fell at the last and last year with Vroum Vroum Mag. This year there is no Annie Power but Willie Mullins goes in mob handed although most will not run.

Mares' Hurdle 4.00pm Tuesday 14th March

Vroum Vroum Mag – Willie Mullins 6-4 10bet

Last year's winner of this but not guaranteed to run in this race but she is antepost favourite with some bookies. If she runs, she wins, if not doing an Annie Power that is. But I think she will go for the Stayers Hurdle or don’t be surprised if Willie Mullins sends her Chasing for a shot at the Ryanair Chase where she is 6-1 but as big as 20-1 and she is 6 from 6 over fences for Mullins before going hurdling.

Airlie Beach – Willie Mullins 16-1 10bet

She could run in this and she could very well win but I am pretty sure she will instead go for the Mares Novice Hurdle where she is 5-2 favourite. As I said above, she is 7 from 7 under rules and does look a bit special.

Limini – Willie Mullins 9-4 10bet

Another Mullins horse who could win this, this must be the only Mullins horse though where we can categorically say she will run in the Mares race. Limini won the Mares Novice Hurdle at the festival last year and she was my bet of the meeting, she absolutely bolted up.

Let’s Dance – Willie Mullins 8-1 10bet

Is anyone getting bored yet with the list of Mullins horses that could win this? Well it doesn’t end yet. Let’s Dance was fourth to Invanovich Gorbatov in last years Triumph Hurdle, she was then second to Apples Jade at Punchestown with Ivanovich Gorbatov in third and since then Let’s Dance is unbeaten 4 from 4. I think she will go for the Neptune Novice Hurdle where she is 10-1 but she is also entered for the Mares Novice Hurdle where she is 7-2 second favourite behind Airlie Beach, so she could go for any of these races.

Pravalaguna – Willie Mullins 25-1 10bet

That man Mullins again, well it’s not surprising as I think he has 15 horses entered for this race. We will get to know more about this horse on Saturday as she is running in the 2:50 Fairyhouse, she was pretty impressive on debut although not a great race but it was a big field. I really liked that effort but it’s too early yet, Saturday will tell us more.

Apples Jade – Gordon Elliott 9-4 10bet

She beat Vroum Vroum Mag in December by a short head but I would think Vroum Vroum Mag would reverse placings if meeting again as Willie Mullins always gets his horses ready for Cheltenham, whereas Gordon Elliott is more of a just get them ready for their next race sort of trainer and at 7-4 I don’t think there is any value whatsoever.

Kotkikova – Nicky Henderson 10-1 10bet

JP McManus shows his hand in this race although she is also entered in the Stayers hurdle where she is 40-1 and the Gold Cup. Yes I was surprised by that one Mr McManus and she is 66-1 but she is more likely to contest the Mares hurdle although I can’t see her winning.

I would expect Willie Mullins to win this race again but what with is the question. He could completely go left field and run a horse I haven’t mentioned like Asthuria, Augusta Kate, Listen Dear, who has won her last 6, Karalee, Benie Des Dieux, Camelia De Cotte. I can’t write up for all of them but if I need to I will on my updated blog nearer the time.
