RACE four on day one sees the day’s big one, the Champion hurdle, run over 2m 1/2f it’s a race about speed and yet again it’s been all about Willie Mullins the last few years with four wins from the last six runnings of the race and the winner for the last two years. It's disappointing Annie Power won’t run and this year it looks a poor race.
Champion Hurdle 3.20 Tuesday 14th March
Faugheen – Willie Mullins 5-4 10bet (now a non-runner)
Has not been seen on a racetrack for over a year but if anyone can get a horse ready for one race it’s Willie Mullins. Not a lot we can say about the horse as we know all about him and if he turns up then he is the one to beat even after a break.
Min – Willie Mullins 4-1 10bet (now a non-runner)
Can’t see him running because as I said elsewhere he looks a natural chaser, plus Mullins could put a few more in this race to win it.
Yorkhill – Willie Mullins 11-2 10bet
Would need supplemented and that could happen after his win over Yanworth last year. Would be a big player if he did run as he is quick enough and jumps well enough and is a festival winner, well worth a punt as it’s NRNB.
Petit Mouchoir – Henry De Bromhead 5-1 10bet
Form not good enough to advise as a bet and odds very short with no value whatsoever, he did win well in the Ryanair at Leopardstown but I am not convinced with the form and as I said no value.
Yanworth – Nicky Henderson 7-2 10bet
I advised this horse as a lay last year and I couldn’t see him reversing form with Yorkhill. And 4-1 is simply far too short a price, he has also had a setback this week and we don’t know too much yet.
Buveur Dair – Nicky Henderson 10-3 10bet
Would be on my shortlist but not overly confident at 5-1. He was available at 40-1 less than a week ago and in a very poor Champion hurdle this year “if Faugheen doesn’t run” he is one that has a half decent chance and he has beaten petit Mouchoir and Limini at Aintree. He was third last year at the festival behind Altior and Min so would struggle if any of those two turned up.
Brain Power – Nicky Henderson 15-2 10bet
I don’t think his form is anywhere good enough but as I said it could be a weak race this year, he is quick and a progressive horse but I think he will make a better chaser.
Jezki – Jessica Harrington 18-1 10bet
Is he past his best or is he still good enough in a maybe weak Champion? He is the same age as Faugheen and Annie Power though. You would be a fool to discount him but it’s uncertain whether he will go for the Champion or the Stayers hurdle where he is 6-1. Definite contender if running though.
