This race has and always will be my favourite race of the week. The variety the X-Country Chase brings to the game makes it an enthralling watch, and it’s one of the races which got me hooked to this sport. I’ve had the pleasure of watching this type of race at Cheltenham on trials day a few years back, and I think it’s amazing. TIGER ROLL has made this race his own in recent years, winning it three times from the last four renewals, and he is the one they have to beat today.
There’s a lot of controversy with Tiger with his owners saying he won’t run in the Grand National, which I think is total nonsense. Personally, I think he should run in the Grand National, and the weights he would carry isn’t the problem for him, as he would still run a cracking race in that as well, for them to want a few pounds less to carry is bonkers.
However, in this race, all the horses carry the same weight, which makes it a much easier task for the class horses in the race. At the age of 12, this will probably be his last race, and it’ll be a tough task, but based on his run in this last year, he could hose up, and I think he has a strong chance of doing so.

EASYSLAND won this race in the year that Tiger Roll didn’t, but he was convincingly beaten by him last year, and with the ground looking likely to remain on the good side of things, I can’t see how he reverses the form this year. He is clearly a very good horse, who handles this track very well, like a lot of the French horses do, as they have a much better and thorough X-Country system. However, his best from comes with cut in the ground, and I think he can fill the places.

PRENGARDE is an interesting runner for E Bolger, who is a master trainer in the X-Country world and is a previous Listed X-Country winner in France, so has the experience and class to win this. The problem is that his winning has won on Very soft and heavy ground, which is totally different to what he’ll be facing in this. His pedigree suggests he’ll prefer that ground as well, but he could be worth an EW shot at the very least.
As for the others, they should simply be outclassed. There are a few who take on the course for the first time, which would be a concern if you’re backing them as it is unique and not all horses take to it. You’ve got DELTA WORK who is the class horse in the race, other than Tiger Roll, but even still I’d be put off from backing him as he hasn’t tried this before.
