Yesterday was a day to remember with a 50/1 winner coming in the Coral Cup in the name of Commander Of Fleet. Now were on to day 3 of the Cheltenham festival.
In the write-up I mentioned how he'd like the good ground he'd be getting, well… it didn't quite go to plan as the heavens opened up and the ground became very testing. Despite that, he handled it very well and powered up the Cheltenham hill. Funambule Sivola was another winner for us in the w/o fav and 2nd fav market, finishing 2nd behind the 2nd favourite and giving us a 15/2 winner. There were many NR's yesterday, and I was on the receiving end, fingers are crossed today is different and we can continue to the good run.
1:30 – Turners Novices' Chase
Personally, this is a no bet race for me unless there is a market for what I want, which might be available on the day of racing, which I’ll come to later. BOB OLINGER is the slight favourite at the time of writing, and if an EVS money shot when the race is between two horses is good value for you, then crack on, but for me, I’d rather watch the two novices race it out. For me, Bob Olinger hasn’t been as impressive over fences as GALOPIN DES CHAMPS, as he hasn’t been as accurate over fences as his rival. In terms of talent, you’d probably say Bob Olinger has more ability, but as a natural over fences, I think Willie’s horse has shown that so far. If I was to have a gun to my head and asked who’d win this, I’d probably say Bob Olinger, on the chance that if his jumping does improve, he could be tough to beat.
Referring to my bet in this race if it’s even possible. I think if you can get a match bet between the outsiders, BUSSELTON will beat EL BARRA into third. The form he has shown is much better than El Barra, and the fact he is bigger odds is a big ludicrous in my opinion. If you can find that option, I think it could be worth taking, and potentially used in your Day 3 Cheltenham accumulators.
- Advised: No bet race, unless you can find a bookie with Busselton to beat El Barra in a match bet @ The Pools

2:10 – Pertemps Network Final Handicap Hurdle
SIRE DU BERLAIS is a bit of a Cheltenham specialist and a specialist in this race. He managed to win this race back-to-back in 2019 and 2020. His 2019 win was pretty sensational, as Barry Geraghty gave him one of the best rides I have ever seen. That phrase gets chucked about quite a lot for bang average rides, but if you get the chance, to watch that race back, it was a sublime ride. Barry seemed to get the best out of this horse, so it is a slight concern that he is now retired and a 7lb conditional jockey takes the reigns. Despite the 7lb claimer is taking the ride, I’ll be backing him each way again for this.
My second play in this in at the total opposite of the weights compared to Sire Du Berlais, and that is DUNBOYNE. This horse has been prepped like a genius for this race in my opinion. The fact he has managed to get this horse in at the bottom of the weights is brilliant. He has travelled through his races like a well-handicapped horse, but on the last two occasions, he has either made an error or has suffered interference. Without those mishaps, he would’ve gone close, but still, I don’t think they would’ve gone for everything in those races, as they’ve had this race in the back of their heads, so have tried to keep his handicap markdown. This could be one of the handicap plots of the meeting.
- Advised: Sire Du Berlais 5/1 (Each Way) & Dunboyne 7/1 (Each Way) @ The Pools

2:50 – Ryanair Chase
The Tizzard's are having a good couple of runs this week, mostly at big odds, so it wouldn’t be a surprise to see his runner, ELDORADO ALLEN run well at a price. He stayed on well up the Cheltenham hill in the Arkle last year, to finish a distant runner-up to Shishkin. He has run well this year, and his run over 3m was arguably a career-best. They drop him back in trip, but on a testing track and what would appear to be testing ground, so that could suit. One to keep an eye on for the place money.

3:30 – Paddy Power Stayers' Hurdle
My play in this race will also have to go against history, as no Mare has won this for as far back as I can see (if you know, then leave it in the comments), but stats like that are going to beat as some point, and in an open race like this, I can’t see why this mare can’t win. ROYAL KAHALA is clearly a talented horse, and though the form needs to be taken to the next level I think she is decent value in this race. She’ll handle the ground, she stays well, and is only a 7yo with seven runs over hurdles, which has yielded 4 wins and 2 runner-ups, with her blip coming in the Mares’ Novice race at Cheltenham last year where she finished lame.
A horse who could outrun his odds is KOSHARI. He’s won a few nice races, including when being previously trained by Willie Mullins. He won a Galway handicap hurdle at odds of 25/1, looking like a strong stayer that day, and he won at 80/1 on stable debut at Aintree for D M Christie. He’s not been seen since, so this race has been in mind for some time, and at the prices, he could run well.
- Advised: Royal Kahala 6/1 (Each Way) & Koshari 66/1 (Small Each Way bet) @ The Pools

4:10 – Plate Handicap Chase
I am instantly drawn to SPIRITOFTHEGAMES, trained by Dan Skelton. This horse has run in races similar to this most for of his career, and although he rarely wins them, he runs with credit each and every time. He has run twice in the race in the past, which has resulted in a 3rd (2019) and 6th (2020). He’s getting older, which makes life tougher for him, but as a result, his handicap mark has dropped significantly, and he is now looking extremely well handicapped off a mark of 136 when you consider he ran off 149 and 147 on his previous attempts in this race.

4:50 – Mares' Novices' Hurdle
think the fact that GRANGEE has course form from the Champion Bumper from last year and looks a strong stayer at the trip so she is worth chancing in this race. Soft ground won’t be an issue, and I expect her to be running on strongly up the hill when others might be tiring. On paper, she has to reverse form with a few in this, but at the odds, I think she is worth siding with.

5:30 – Kim Muir Challenge Cup
The mount of Mr H C Swan is my selection in the race, and that is FAKIR D’ALENE. This horse a similar profile to his stablemate who is much shorter than him in the market, but has actually managed to win a couple of races along the way. Gordon is confident that a step up in trip will suit, and when he thinks that you have to believe the man, as he doesn’t get it wrong all too often. The jockey booking doesn’t concern me, as he has a decent record when riding for Gordon. He has ridden for him just seven times, resulting in one win and a further four placed efforts.

Good luck ladies and gentlemen well done all the lucky winners yesterday you deserve it
4:25 Hexham – croagh Patrick 3/1
Some very kind words yesterday from a lot of you, which is always nice to receive. It’s good to see so many of you backing the big 50/1 winner.
However, just because I landed a 50/1 winner yesterday and 10/1 winner on day 1, doesn’t mean today is going to follow in the same way. Keep to the same stake plan, and ensure you don’t give the profits back to the bookies.
I’ve put up quite a few big priced EW horses again, but I’m confident they can run big races. Fingers crossed on another good day, I’m sure it’ll be hard though.
Fantastic tipping yesterday 👏 Rizz Big well done👍
New course and a dry day expected so I can’t see the ground being anything worse then soft.
Turners
I think Ireland might win this one….!!!
No English runner in the race ??? I’m sure the sponsors won’t be too happy with that.
Still on paper it could be the race of the festival with the 2 best Novice chasers going head to head. Who will win……haven’t a clue but let’s hope they both run their race and make it the race we all want to see.
Pertemps
Elliott has had 10 runners in the past 6 years in this race. 3 winners 5 places and no horse finished worse than 5th.
He has 6 runners in the race this year to complicate things.
I’ve gone for
Sire Du Berlais (2019 & 2020 winner) he was also 2nd in the stayers last year. He’s 4lbs higher this year but the jockey takes 7lbs off so even though he’s 10 must go close.
The other is Tullybeg who was very progressive early in the season before running 5th when qualifying over C&D. I got the impression that that run was exactly what the plan was, just doing enough and looks well handicapped to go close.
Ryanair
Allah should be too good again this year but he’s not a bet.
I’ve backed Janidil in the w/o market 7/2
Stayers
104 10yr olds have ran in grade 1’s over 3m+ since 2003 and not single winner amongst them.
That puts a line straight through PP, CHAMP and Koshari.
There are question marks about every horse at the head of the betting.
Will Flooring Porter manage the occasion ?
Will the real Klassical Dream turn up ?
Will Thyme Hill enjoy the probable soft ground ?
The only horse that there’s no worries about is Royal Kahala. She will thrive on the conditions and will also have those 7lbs in her favour and I think she will take a lot of beating.
If Flooring Porter does stay calm and can jump out in front, he will also go very close. Should be a great race.
PLATE
I’m sticking with Fusil Raffles here. He’s on his lowest ever mark and his 4 best RPR’s have been run at Cheltenham.
Mares Novice
No real interest in this but Dinoblue was impressive on her first start and vibes are she’s going to take all the beating
Kim Muir
I’m sticking with Smoking Gun here even though he’s drifting in the market. Off 140 and Codd in the saddle he must have an ew chance.
BOL
21mil fell yesterday DC officially soft heavy in places with due this morning cloud cover later so probably wont get much better until tomorrow.
