We made a slight profit on Day 1 of the Cheltenham Festival with Corach Rambler doing the business and Byker grabbing a place. Hopefully, you picked out some winners, and let us know in the comments if you did and what you fancy for today!
We saw some brilliant performances yesterday, with Constitution Hill proving what a class act he is. He is a horse of a generation and I can't see how he gets beat. He'll have a lot of horses avoiding him, so I can envisage the future Champion Hurdle races being very poor and him going off at Frankel odds of 1/20, etc unless they send him chasing, which would be a mouth-watering prospect.
All my detailed previews for Day 2 at the Cheltenham Festival can be found below. (will update as they get posted, so in the meantime put your thoughts of tomorrow's racing in the comments)
- 13:30 The Ballymore Novices' Hurdle
- 14:10 The Brown Advisory Novices' Chase
- 14:50 The Coral Cup Handicap Hurdle
- 15:30 The Betway Queen Mother Champion Chase
- 16:10 The Glenfarclas Cross Country Chase
- 16:50 The Johnny Henderson Grand Annual Challenge Cup
- 17:30 The Weatherbys Champion Bumper
Don't forget you can also have a go at entering the Champion Tipster Competition where there's £200 in Free Bets to be won.
13:30 – Ballymore Novices' Hurdle
I'm not one for taking rumours into consideration, but there's been a lot of speculation about how good Impaire Et Passe is. Normally, when the rumours floating around are this strong from the Willie Mullins camp, they rarely get it wrong.

14:10 – Brown Advisory Novices' Chase
I think that this race isn't a great renewal, but I do think that Gerri Colombe is a potential Gold Cup horse for next year. He's not the most flashy horse, but he gets the job done and this stamina test is surely going to bring out more improvement. He reminds of a younger version of Native River. By that comment I mean he isn't the quickest horse, he doesn't have the sexy profile, but he will stay the trip, jumps well, and will keep plugging on.
Full race preview:
14:50 – Coral Cup Handicap Hurdle
Beacon Edge is one of the horses at the top of the weights, carrying 11st 10lbs, but will carry 11st 7lbs on the day due to man of the moment, Michael O'Sullivan taking the ride and taking away 3lbs. This is one of the class horses in the race.
My outside pick of this race is GRAND ROI, trained by Gordon Elliott. If you look at this horse's recent form figures you'll think he has no chance, and I can totally understand that, but I get the feeling there is ability with this horse and this race would've been on Gordon's mind for quite some time.
Full race preview:
15:30 – Queen Mother Champion Chase
I am going to give Editeur Du Gite a chance in this. People will think he fluked it last time around at Cheltenham, but I don't think that's the case. I just think he has progressed into a really good horse. He was always a good, hardy handicapper, running well and winning in some big handicaps, but the last two runs have seen him take his form to a whole new level.
Full race preview:
16:10 – Cross Country Chase
Even though Delta Work is the favourite, I will be taking him on with a newcomer to the X-Country ranks in the shape of Galvin. This horse is now probably the ‘class' horse in the race, more so than Delta Work as he is the younger horse, and was fourth in last year's Gold Cup.
Full race preview:
16:50 – Grand Annual Handicap Chase
The one I've fallen on is the bottom weight, The Last Day. I criticised Global Citizen for being an 11yo, but this is different with this horse. He is lightly raced for his age and I think this race has been the plan for quite a while.
Full race preview:
17:30 – Champion Bumper
The one I like is actually the horse which A Dream To Share beat last time out. Fact To File was probably out-speeded by today's market leader when they clashed 39 days ago, but I thought Fact To File was sticking on well to his task and was only starting to get rolling.

Ballymore
Winner Impaire Et Passe
Horses Backed Good Land 5/1, Impaire Et Passe 6/1 both AP
I think it’s fair to say the Irish Novices are ahead of the UK when you look at the results from Day 1.
In the Supreme there were 8 Irish runners and they finished 1-8.
In the Boodles they occupied 5 of the first 6 places and I think they will come out on top in this race aswell but not sure who wins.
Plenty of support for Good Land after MN’s win in the Supreme and Barry Connell is adamant he’s going to win the double, but to win a ballymore you need gears and that’s what IEP brings to the table and that may prove to be the difference.
BANC
Winner Gerri Colombe NAP
Horses Backed Gerri Colombe 7/1 AP
Been on this one since last year and am really confident he will come out on top. Will love the step up in trip and the ground has also turned in his favour so has everything going for him
Coral Cup
Winner HMS Seahorse
Horses Backed HMS Seahorse 14/1 AP
Obviously a race you need luck in running with a max field but HMS has been progressive since being gelded and a mark of 143 is pretty fair.
Champion Chase
Winner Energumene
Horses Backed Energumene, Edwardstone (both in multiples)
I’m torn between the two at the top of the market. The weather looks like its turning and id imagine the ground will be softer than day 1 which will benefit Energumene. I also think he will be ridden differently to the Clarance House and allowed to stride on, but Edwardstone has definitely progressed since last season and it should be a cracking race.
I think it comes down to how soft the ground becomes as to who wins.
X Country
Winner Delta Work
Horses Backed Delta Work
I was saying Galvin for this race up until yesterday but I’ve changed my mind again with the ground potentially coming up soft. I can’t see anything else getting involved tbh.
Grand Annual
Winner Andy Dufresne
Horses Backed Andy Dufresne 12/1 AP
Won’t go on too much about him but think this has been the plan all campaign
Bumper
Winner Haven’t a Scooby
Horses Backed Chapeau De Soleil, Favour and Fortune 33/1 ew 5 places
WM has 10 runners in the race but I don’t think it’s a very strong line up with no real stars like other years, so I’ve gone for Alan King’s FAF who won really well lto by 7 1/2L staying on strongly and I think he will eat the hill.
I backed CDS a long time ago but don’t give him much of a chance having only had the 1 run to date but will let it run.

Lovely darts Duncan and great to see you posting again 👍
When you say “minefield”, do you mean too many short priced horses or many longer odds horses that could cause us punters problems? Or both….big prize money after all 🙂
Thanks Mr Carpet ,you have some very nice AP prices today BOL
Your both top gunners DC and DPC 😂
Going with DC
GC and DW looks a solid double
Good luck everyone

2.50 Langer Dan
4.10 Snow leapordess
4.50 Andy Dufrense
Each way doubles and treble.
Good luck 👍
Disappointed in first race.
Langer Dan at 9s though 😊
Spursman ,I just mean there is nothing at Cheltenham I would be confident about today
1-30 Impaire Et Passe
2-10 Gerri Colombe ,
2-50 Beacon Edge EW 12/1 .I backed the 50/1 winner of this last year thought he would be back to defend his crown .I like this one because he is a grade 1 winner dropping into a Handicap for the first time .
3-30 Energumene 13/8 Best horse in the race
4-10 Delta Work I just cant see this lad get beat
4-50 Andy Dufresne 8/1 backed this one last year finished a good 2nd hopefully he can go one place better this year
5-30 Chapeau De Soleil 20/1 This have been my nap for the festival since Christmas backed it at 10/1 now out to 20/1 cant desert him now.
I’m not one for Ante-Post bets, especially when I’ve got to wait a whole 12 months for it win/lose, but I think 14/1 on Gerri Colombe for the 2024 Gold Cup is good odds.
I think he wins today, and if he does you better believe that 14/1 won’t be around for much longer.

What price is Gerri for the gold cup now because the way he finished his race off, the Gold Cup trip would be perfect for him
