It's finally here! Day 1 of the Cheltenham Festival. Find my best bets and tips for day 1 as well as links to racecards below.
Yesterday saw us land one winner from the four selections, not great, and resulting in a small loss if you spent the same stake on all singles, as Kansas City Chief won at a drifted price of 5/2 with a cracking front running performance. I love that horse, as he tries his heart out every time without fail, and still loves the game at the grand old age of 13.
The greatest show on turf is here once again, and I'm sure you flat fans will argue that name is taken by Royal Ascot, but not in my eyes, Cheltenham is by far the best week of racing. As most of you will know by now, I do prefer the jumps, so this week is like a kid at Christmas, we've had a decent couple of months on the thread, which has hopefully built up a decent little pot, and I'm hoping we (Including Cairnzy) can increase that this week.

I've done previews for each individual race of the Festival, so there won't be as much of a write-up on the daily post, more of what the selection is in the race, and a link to redirect you to the specific race where you can get your brew and have a read of what I've had to say. A fair amount of effort has gone into the previews, and the studying of each race, so please do have a read, and if you have any pointers/feedback on how I can improve them for the next couple of days, put them in the comments.
1:30 – Supreme Novices' Hurdle
After delving into the race, and thinking about it tactically, I think KILCRUIT could be the value in the race. Yes, he hasn’t got off to the career over hurdles that 99% of us expected, but it doesn’t mean his career is over. This runner-up in the Champion bumper in 2021 at Cheltenham still has bags of ability, and there’s no doubt in my mind that he is a Grade 1 horse, whether that is today or not, we’ll have to see.
- Advised: Kilcruit (Each Way) 17/2 The Pools

2:10 – The Arkle Challenge Trophy
I think you can give a chance to HAUT EN COULEURS in this race. He has only raced twice over fences, which resulted in a fall last time out, in the same race Blue Lord, Saint Sam and Rivier D’etel were competing in, but I’m willing to forgive him for that. I think this race could set up beautifully for this horse. He is a keen goer, so the fact that there is a fair amount of front runners will make this a good test of stamina and will allow him to settle.
- Advised: Haut En Couleurs (Each Way) 7/1 The Pools

2:50 – The Ultima Handicap Chase
The British have won this race for the last ten years (could be more, but I can only see the last ten), and the main contingencies from the British in my opinion is, CORACH RAMBLER. I love this horse, and I’ve tipped him up on the thread three times now, which has resulted in a win, a place and fall. I think he has so much untapped potential, and when I saw him win at Cheltenham earlier in the year, I instantly thought that’s an Ultima horse, and here we are.
The Irish horse which got my attention is BEN DUNDEE, trained by the small outfit of Andrew Lynch. This lad hasn’t been seen since running a belter at Leopardstown, where he finished second in a €100k handicap. The fact he’s been put away for so long suggests this has been the plan for a long time, and they’ve put him away to keep his handicap markdown, then running him again, and potentially ruining that.
- Both Advised: Corach Rambler (Each Way) 10/1 & Ben Dundee (Each Way) 16/1 The Pools

3:30 Unibet Champion Hurdle
I think the interesting runner of the field, who will more than likely be outclassed but has the right to be in this field and test his luck is TOMMY’S OSCAR. Obviously, this is a huge step up in grade for Tommy’s Oscar, but the way he has been winning suggests he deserves to take his chance at Cheltenham. If he could finish in the places, that would be a great story, and at the odds of 33/1+ I will be having a very small EW bet on him.
- Advised: Tommy's Oscar (Small bet Each Way) 33/1 The Pools
- ? Read my full Champion Hurdle Preview here
4:10 – Close Brothers Mares' Hurdle
A strong pace is what QUEENS BROOK will want, as she looks a thorough stayer on this trip. She might’ve wanted the ground slightly slower than what she’ll get, but the strong pace on offer and the stiff track will hopefully counter that and play to her strengths. She is my play in this race, and I tipped her up a few weeks ago, where she was given a terrible ride, all things considered. That run was clearly a prep run for this race, and I was convinced she would run very well in this, after watching that display at Punchestown.
- Advised: Queens Brook (Win) 7/2 The Pools
- ? Read my full Mares' Hurdle Preview here
4:50 – Boodles Juvenile Handicap
Gordon Elliot has been sneaky in the past, winning this race with Veneer Of Charm at odds of 33/1 back in 2018. I think EBASARI has taken a similar route as that horse. They both won a maiden race, then ran stinkers in between the Cheltenham race, and on his last race, I think it was fairly evident that Davy Russell wasn’t full trying to win at Naas, in the race which was won by Brazil. This is Davy Russel’s only ride on Day 1, which is interesting in itself. I will have a small play on this horse.
- Advised: Ebasari (Small bet Each Way – this race is a total minefield) 12/1 The Pools
- ? Read my full Boodles Juvenile Handicap Preview here
5:30 – National Hunt Chase
VANILLIER is a horse with ability, as we all saw at last year's Cheltenham Festival when he romped home in the Albert Bartlett, beating Pats Fancy and Stattler, and beating them by many lengths. On pure ability, you’d have to say this lad has the most, but since that win at Cheltenham, he has struggled over fences. His jumping has been sticky, and not up to scratch, but I think this longer trip will suit and will aid his jumping.
- Advised: Vanillier (Win) 11/4 The Pools

3-30
Eptante 18-1 ew HILLS.
11-10 top 4 finish BETFAIR.
If appreciate it had a run this season would be all over that one based on last year’s supreme win but with the unfair weight honeysuckle gets might be a lot to ask today
——————————————————-
4-10
burning victory 10-1 ew 5 places SKYBET.
Beat today’s favourite Queens brook last time on 3lb worse terms by 1.5 lengths.
Went off at 1-2 fave that day so top 5 should be attainable here.
Also a former festival winner which is a plus, only because of the Goshen incident granted but it’s a win in the history books and the 2nd on the flat to buzz in the cesarawich also reads well.
———————————————————–
4-50
HMS seahorse 19-2 ew extra 7 places.
Milldam 80-1 ew 6 places paddy power and 25-1 ew extra 10 places.
This has similar french form as Gaelic warrior but is not with Mullins so is 80-1.
Mullins never won this race and only one of his 16 runners have finished in the top 5 so 9-4 for Gaelic warrior, a horse who hasn’t won a race or ran outside France not ran since last June or even ran for the yard surely is risky today ??.
———————————————————
5-30
If I’ve got any money left will be on run wild Fred 15-8 who’s 2nd in the Irish national at least shows he will stay the distance, only Elliott’s other entry braeside seems to have proven form over this distance

Just done two today, I just have a sneaking feeling that Jonbon has a bit up his sleeve, so £20 on at Skybet, money back if loses, and I’ve also done Riviere D’etel, one of my top fancies for the week. May do an ew lucky 15 for later races.
Having Cameron Smith @ 33’s ew for the player’s championship has started the week of nicely, also had a free £5 bet from Skybet yesterday, put it on Hammond’s horse at Wolverhampton, won at 11/1.😁

magic daze 2.10 ew well done all winners yesterday
Impressive
discordantly 2.50 ew
zanahiyr 3.30 ew
Big well done Rizzel 👏 10/1 winner with Corach Rambler👍😀
Anyone on Mrs Milner must be gutted, absolutely cruising, badly hampered by the fallers and still got back up for third.
Not a good day
Mighty Potters race was run when he made a bad mistake 4 out but the performance of Constitution Hill was breathtaking.
Saint Sam then got brought down and Blue Lord wasn’t good enough.
Fantastikas finished 7th but I only had 6 places and Ben Dundee made too many mistakes.
HMS Seahorse and Queens Brook brought some place monet at least
Run Wild Fred was well beaten by Statler
Well done to any winners today.
JWPepper…..excellent tipping 👏
