Cheltenham Festival: Coral Cup Handicap Hurdle Tips

We enter the first handicap of the day with the Coral Cup, being as competitive as ever as you’d always expect. There are so many horses in this with a chance, so unfortunately won’t be able to go through the majority of them.

Starting of with the favourite, SAINT FELICIEN. Arguably, you could say he is the correct favourite, as he is extremely unexposed with just the three runs under his belt, finishing 2^nd in a Grade 3 last time out behind Darasso, who is a classy horse. The time before, he won a decent Novice Hurdle, which has produced a decent bit of form with the runner-up since winning a Class 1 Listed race, as well as being placed in a Grade 2 and Grade 3.

Personally, in a hardy competitive handicap, I don’t think I could possibly side with a horse with this experience at these prices. There is a strong chance he is far too good for this field, and is well handicapped off a mark of 147, but at around 6/1 I’ll be looking elsewhere.

A horse who has gone missing since his good Novice season is COMMANDER OF FLEET, and this horse is my selection in this race. Shane Fitzgerald takes off a handy 5lbs, and this horse will be staying on strongly up the hill. He might be off the bridle a little earlier than some others, but he will keep plodding along. He has good course form when finishing 2^nd to Minella Indo in the Albert Bartlett in 2019 which is clearly good form, with the winner since winning the Gold Cup, horses like Allaho in behind and Lisnagar Oscar.

I think the drying ground is up this guy’s street, he won a Grade 1 hurdle on good to yielding. Shane gets on well with this horse, they combined when winning a decent pot at Navan last December at odds of 40/1. His most recent run was a good effort, but I think the soft ground he encountered wouldn’t have helped, plus he bumped into a couple of nice horses. I imagine they’ll have him close to the pace, to avoid any trouble and to ensure he can get his engine into top gear without interference.

Other horses I did like the look of but wasn’t quite convinced were INDIGO BREEZE, who shares the same view as Saint Felicien. A very unexposed horse, with decent form, but he might lack the experience of a race like this, where he might get buried away in the pack and his jumping could fall apart. Another horse who could bolt up and I wouldn’t have said “how’s that won”, as he has potential.

The British have a few interesting runners, with GOWEL ROAD probably heading the list. The Twiston-Davies team seem pretty sweet on his chances. He has course form, ran well last time out over a trip which is arguably too short, and like I mentioned yesterday, Nigel is generally very good at placing horses in Cheltenham handicaps, so he has to be feared.

CAMPROND is Phillip Hobbs’ best chance of a winner this week when asked on Monday, so is another horse who shouldn’t be underestimated, even though he doesn’t look like my cup of tea in this.
