Alan “Thommo” Thomson is back with his best 3 free racing tips for Saturday.

Ayr Gold Cup 3.40pm – POPMASTER

The Ayr Gold Cup is one of Scotland’s most historic races and Newmarket trainer Ed Walker has two notable runners in hat-trick seeker Great Ambassador and POPMASTER (3.40), with Hollie Doyle a notable booking for the latter.

Popmaster, a progressive three-year-old lurking near the foot of the weights, was most impressive when drawing more than two lengths clear of Royal Scimitar at Ascot two weeks ago. There may be more improvement forthcoming wearing first-time blinkers, and connections will be heartened by a mostly dry weather forecast.

Great Ambassador picked up a 5lb penalty when successful on a slick surface at York 13 days ago, beating 109-rated Tabdeed, and has really got his act together since beating Rathbone on a slick surface at Newmarket. He is drawn in stall one on the far side and next door is Michael Dods’ Stewards’ Cup winner Commanche Falls, a danger to all under Connor Beasley.

Kevin Ryan relies on Bielsa and Hey Jonesy as he bids to build on the victories of Advanced (2007), Our Jonathan (2011), Captain Ramius (2012) and Brando (2016).

The consolation Silver Cup takes place 35 minutes earlier and may throw up a clue to any track bias.

Ayr 4.50pm – REDARNA

REDARNA (4.50) is bidding for a remarkable seventh-course victory in the 7f handicap. Dianne Sayer’s gelding is drawn wide in stall 11 but Jimmy Sullivan should get a good tow into the race off front-running Poet’s Magic, collared on the line here on Thursday. Cassy One scored twice on this card last year and ran an encouraging fourth on Thursday when reportedly struck into. He would be another danger if recovering fully from that injury.

Ayr 3.25pm – ARAMAIC

There is an excellent card at Newbury where ARAMAIC (3.25) can land the Dubai Duty Free Handicap for William Haggas and Tom Marquand. The colt is on a roll after wide-margin victories at Musselburgh and York, and is fancied to avenge a narrow Kempton defeat by Godolphin’s re-opposing Mo’assess earlier in the season at Kempton.
