THERE'S a bumper eight-race Sunday card at Kelso but with tomorrow’s twilight Flat fixture at Musselburgh in mind, I’ll restrict myself to a couple of wagers at the Borders track.
PRINCE KHURRAM (1.35) was trading at 6-1 in places early this morning and that’s a knocking each-way price in the opener.
Donald McCain’s hurdler really needs good ground to show his best and Prince Khurram found conditions in his favour when rattling off three wins in 16 days at Bangor (twice) and Fontwell.
That winning sequence came to an end here 18 days ago when he was just outclassed by Mirsaale and Beeno, two horses rated in the 130s. There is nothing of that calibre in opposition today and hopefully the ground has dried out enough for Prince Khurram (officially good last night).
Brian Ellison’s favourite Newstart has finished runner-up in four of his last five starts, three of those coming in Ireland at Galway and Listowel.
Sudski Star scored quite comfortably here over fences 18 days ago and was a dual Kelso winner back in April/May on good ground. He has to be in the shake-up.
Top weight Martila was last seen chasing home Irish raider Space Ship at Ayr and the betting market should tell us if Ray Green’s mare is fit to go.
MAYO STAR (3.50) represents the northern powerhouse partnership of Malcolm Jefferson and Brian Hughes and is vying for favouritism in the 2m 4f novices’ hurdle. Formerly with Kevin Ryan in his bumper days, Mayo Star ran third to Blue Hussar over 2m 2f and that sets a fair standard.
