CRIBBS CAUSEWAY (3.50) returns to a more suitable trip and has a live chance in an intriguing Class 2 fillies’ handicap at Salisbury.
Following a hat-trick of victories in June, Cribbs Causeway contested a valuable 1m 6f handicap at Haydock won by John Gosden’s Zenon but after racing prominently, the petrol gauge was down to empty passing the furlong pole.
This 1m 4f trip is more suitable for Roger Charlton’s three-year-old.
Notice finished a neck in front of Tuesday’s Nottingham winner Melinoe and is closely matched with Langlauf, while Pacharana was impressive at Bath but has been saddled by a 10lb rise.
PADRINHO (5.25) may have found the softer ground against him last time but was a clear-cut winner at Sandown two weeks earlier on a sounder surface. The top weight can bounce back at tasty odds.
At Beverley, PORTLEDGE (5.10) takes a slight drop in class in the mile handicap. James Bethell’s colt returned from a 179-day absence to finish third to the David Simcock-trained Hugin at Redcar.
That should have put him spot on for this Class 5 event and a repeat of his run at Newcastle in February when third to Mystique Man and Indian Dandy would make him very hard to topple. Indian Dandy finished fourth to Bless Him in the Britannia Handicap at Royal Ascot off a mark of 92 and Portledge gets in here off 72.
On an interesting evening card at Chepstow, SLEEP EASY (6.45) is another who will strip sharper for a comeback run, in this case a spin over hurdles at Newton Abbot 17 days ago.
Neil Mulholland’s gelding mopped up a 2m 5f Wincanton handicap in March and came out under a 7lb penalty to finish sixth to Brio Conti in a Class 2 hurdle at Kempton. Robert Winston is a good booking and Sleep easy is equipped with a tongue tie for the first time. A bit of rain wouldn’t go amiss.
Musselburgh scorer Project Bluebook ran fourth in the Fred Winter Juvenile Handicap Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival and is likely to figure in the JP McManus silks.
Thirty minutes earlier, TOBOUGGALOU (6.15) can make a bold bid to land her hat-trick. The mare is closely matched with What A Scorcher but seems to be improving with every run at Chepstow.
