Alan Thomson’s Racing Tips: Young John can Come of Age at Chelmsford City

There's racing at Taunton, Ludlow, Kempton, Southwell and Chelmsford City. It's that latter two that Thommo's three selections come from with picks at 5/2, 4/1 and 6/1.

Chelmsford City 7.45

YOUNG JOHN (7.45) let his many backers down at Chelmsford City on Saturday night but he could well mount a successful recovery mission back over course and distance.

He probably went off too fast and effectively set up the race for the hold-up horses. Ridden with a little more restraint, Young John can regain the winning thread.

Southwell 12.10

David Barron saddled a wide-margin winner at Southwell on Monday in Black Salt and MR COCO BEAN (12.10) is a solid each-way wager against hot-pot Shearian.

They met here last season, with Shearian (14-1) running out a game winner, with Mr Coco Bean back in fourth.

My selection is 6lb better off and he went off an 8-11 shot that day and may well have under-performed. Shearian was just denied by an Irish raider on Monday and is clearly the one to beat.

Southwell 3.50

SPACE WAR (3.50) is worth each-way support in the ‘Hands And Heels’ Apprentices’ Handicap, with Mark Crehan one of the more experienced riders on show. His third to Indian Pursuit at Chelmsford City in September was a solid effort.
