SIR CHAUVELIN (2.15) appears a well-handicapped horse over hurdles and can scoop a tasty £20,000 New Year’s Day pot at Musselburgh.
Jim Goldie’s gelding hasn’t been seen over obstacles since finishing behind Ivan Grozny at Aintree in April, 2016, having previously landed a juvenile hurdle over course and distance at this fixture two years ago, romping home by 12 lengths from Magic Dancer.
A decisive all-weather success at Newcastle last month means Sir Chauvelin arrives here in good nick and receives plenty of weight from Keith Dalgleish’s Silver Concorde, so impressive in mopping up maiden and novice hurdles here in recent weeks.
Dear Sire shoulders top weight but will find this company less onerous than his fourth to Poetic Rhythm at Chepstow in October. It looks a cracking race to bring in 2018.
UPSILON BLUE (1.40) found only Cold March too strong in this race last year and should go close for local owner Ray Green.
He was a little out of his depth last time at Ascot when a fading fifth behind Sir Valentine but may have the edge over southern raiders Knockgraffon and Max Ward.
AHEAD OF THE CURVE (1.05) is worth an each-way interest in the 3m handicap hurdle.
The shorter 2m 3f trip at Doncaster last time wouldn’t have been ideal but the top weight acquitted himself perfectly well in third behind Dan Skelton’s Value At Risk and the Jonjo O’Neill-trained Cake De L’Isle. Alan King’s favourite
Keep In Line trailed 11 lengths away in fourth so it looked a pretty decent contest on paper.
Ahead Of The Curve beat Thorpe five lengths at Perth in the summer and also chased home in-form Sun Cloud over three miles at the Scone track (heavy).
Stamp Your Feet carries the JP McManus colours in the 3m handicap hurdle and will be fancied to supplement his Hereford success over Rayvin Black and Court Minstrel.
A 4lb rise is very fair but he has stamina to prove over this trip. Stamp Your Feet had a sight of the Musselburgh track last January when running fourth to Project Bluebook over two miles and he stayed 2m 4f well enough when chasing home Bags Groove at Aintree.
Kim Bailey’s Cresswell Legend has won his last two at Ludlow, a track not dissimilar to Musselburgh, and goodish ground would be ideal.
CRAIG STAR (2.50) made a pleasing return from a short break to hunt up Monfass at Carlisle on a deep surface and this good ground scorer at Kelso should go well for Donald McCain.
Mister Showman, a winner over hurdles for Dan Skelton, has been plying his trade on the all-weather at Southwell with some success for Keith Dalgleish.
At Southwell, MAMA AFRICA (2.55) won't be an 11-1 winner this time but is fancied to follow-up her recent romp, despite runner-up Muqarred weighted to just about take his revenge.
However, Mama Africa has looked a natural on the Fibresand and her forcing tactics will burn off most of her rivals before the home bend.
LUATH (3.30) is well worth an each-way interest in the Class 6 mile handicap.
His third to Monsieur Jimmy and Mach One in mid-November was a good run and Luath was beaten less than a length by Shearian (last year's winner of this event) with Swot a close up third. My selection lost several lengths at the start and had an awful lot to do off the home turn. Fourth horse Ubla scored at Lingfield last week.
At Cheltenham, the eight-runner Betbright Casino Handicap Hurdle is the right shape for an each-way punt and BOYHOOD (2.35) fits the bill at around 8-1.
Tom George's gelding ran fourth to The Organist in what was probably a better class race at Newbury (soft) and seems possessed with plenty of stamina.
On Sunday I had winner and an each-way winner from the two tips posted so it was a good end to the year.
For now this will be the only racing thread so post tips and comments here. I won't always answer queries – simply because I'm too busy to be checking in 24/7 so I'll apologise in advance.

Alan whats your view on the dipper chase am surprised with the money for Yanworth it’s jumping his been terrible.
Reckon Alan at this time will be thinking about his first beer rather than horses.
Willoughby court 11-8 looks the most solid pick.
Won finishing strongly v yanworth last time.
If geraghty finds the key to yanworth who knows, but he flopped here in champion hurdle when well fancied and Willoughby won the Neptune.
This is a different discipline though and I can only bet on what I’ve seen over large obstacles.
