MECCA’S SPIRIT (2.00) came good in no uncertain style at Ayr last week and is strongly fancied to follow up under her fixed penalty.
The three-year-old responded positively to the fitting of first-time blinkers, drawing clear of Royal Duchess over today’s distance. Paula Muir takes off 5lb and Mecca’s Spirit is bred to enjoy this easier ground.
With some showers forecast we may be in for some surprise results but QUESTION OF FAITH (3.00) looks fairly solid as she has plenty of form with give underfoot.
Question Of Faith hasn’t hit last season’s heights but is now well handicapped. She had Italian Riviera more than two lengths behind when scoring at Catterick last August and is 7lb better off with the top weight. Golden Jeffrey showed battling qualities to win at Musselburgh six days ago and stamina is his strong suit.
SIR DERRICK (2.30) ran a close second to in-form Whinmoor at Redcar and handled softer ground when running quite well in the spring. Catterick runner-up Pop Telecom looks the main danger.
If the rain arrives in enough quantity to turn the track soft then Royal Shaheen and Indian Chief are two mudlarks well worth an each-way punt at decent odds in a couple of handicaps around the bend.
