RETURNING GLORY (2.50) can overcome top weight for Saeed Bin Suroor at Ripon.
The three-year-old has been a bit disappointing but his third to Glorious Army at Newbury last time was given a boost of sorts on Saturday when runner-up Carp Kid scored at Windsor. Returning Glory finished only a head behind Carp Kid at Newbury giving him a stone and this doesn’t look a particularly strong event.
On a busy Bank Holiday Monday the amateur riders’ Derby at Epsom can be often overlooked, with C’est No Mour bidding to repeat last year’s victory under Simon Walker. It looks a tougher renewal this year, with Jamie Codd coming over from Ireland to take the ride on John Quinn’s JE SUIS CHARLIE (3.40).
My selection can be a tricky customer but is capable on his day, especially when encountering a little juice underfoot. His fifth to Jeremiah in stronger event at Thirsk wasn’t a bad effort. Peter Chapple-Hyam has also booked a top Irish rider for Medalla De Oro, up 4lb since chasing home Maifalki at Haydock.
BATHSHEBA BAY (4.50) dug deep to win at Windsor a fortnight ago and he handled an easy surface when chasing home Dee Ex Bee at the 2017 Qatar Goodwood festival.
Locally-trained CORAZON ESPINADO (5.25) had a neck to spare over Cuban Heels when they clashed over course and distance in April. They are weighted to dead-heat but Corazon Espinado ran quite well in defeat 12 days ago and gets the nod.
At Chepstow, BANKSY’S ART (6.05) encounters a soft surface for the first time since finishing second to Victory Chime in a 17-runner contest at Goodwood in May. The handicapper has dropped Miock Channon’s gelding a couple of pounds and Scott McCullagh takes off a further 7lb.
