ELEGIAC (7.45) was last seen running a respectable race at Royal Ascot and Mark Johnston’s three-year-old can reap the benefit of a drop in class at Hamilton this evening.
Elegiac was sent to Ascot on the back of a nose defeat from Roger Varian’s Kaanoon at Wolverhampton and he may progress past solid yardsticks Jabbaar and Kensington Star.Johnston made multiple entries for this handicap but is happy to rely on Elegiac.
The handicapper has cut CORTON LAD (8.15) some slack and he will be a tough nut to crack from the front.
He won here last May off 87 and is 11lb lower this evening, plus Rowan Scott’s 3lb allowance. Corton Lad tried to make all at Chester last time but was reeled in by Lorelina. The blinkers are replaced with a visor and he could have too much firepower for three-year-olds Arch Gold and Emerald Rocket.
AUSTIN POWERS (9.15) proved a disappointing favourite behind Vive La Difference over course and distance and blinkers are applied. Soft ground was almost certainly a contributing factor as his previous runs on good to firm were all highly respectable. A repeat of his Goodwood third to Lord Vetinari (Chester winner on Saturday) would almost certainly be good enough.
Six go to post for a tricky little fillies’ event and MORTICIA (8.45) could be another one for the locals now dropping into handicap company.
She has been competing against some of the big southern yards and was short of room when delivering her challenge at Thirsk last time when not beaten far by Sir Michael Stoute’s Bedwyyah and the William Haggas-trained Beauty Filly (third at Chester off 83 on Saturday). An initial mark of 73 gives Morticia every chance.
There is nothing between Isabella and Copper Baked on their Ripon form behind Asoof and it is hard to weigh up the merit of the form as it developed into something of a sprint off a pedestrian pace.
Paramount Love is the likely pacemaker as she made all to score easily at Nottingham at the end of May. That came on soft ground, however, and a 9lb rise makes life difficult.
BERLIOS (6.15) should get favourite backers off to a flier in the amateur riders’ handicap. Rebecca Bastiman has the gelding in terrific form and a repeat of his run at Ayr when scoring in convincing fashion would make him hard to beat. Simon Walker is booked.
Adrian Keatley sent The McGregornator to Ayr a couple of times last summer and his gelding was beaten a short head by Black Isle Boy and then ran fourth to Muscika. Since then his mark has dropped from 73 to 66 and the Irish raider may well attract market support.
BIG LACHIE (7.15) was just denied at Brighton and although nudged up another 2lb he can defy top weight. This stiff five furlongs is ideal.
All-weather winner Alsvinder has been disappointing on turf but has been dropped another couple of pounds after his fifth at Ayr 10 days ago.
Cobbler Quinn is interesting going handicapping on the back of his fourth in a novice stakes. Keith Dalgleish had him entered over five furlongs at Musselburgh so clearly considers Cobbler Quinn isn’t devoid of speed.

You’re smashing it, John. I actually got the Sun King for 175/1 EW on Bef365 which is extraordinary tipping.
Well done, yeah I know bigger odds were available but I sometimes go for slightly lower odds for more places, just depends on the player, I think 365 were 5 places & boylesports were 7 places

Another one of Johnb’s useless World Cup Stats
England have been the betting favourite for every World Cup match that they have played since losing to Brazil in 2002
That’s amazing – I know they’ve hardly played a top-20 side in recent tournaments so that helps.
I suppose the most surprising was Germany 2010 but England opened favourites and got backed into lower as well

Amelia George now as low as 10/1
She was retired at 4yo and is now an 8yo that’s 1565 days off the track, she only raced twice and was beaten 26 lengths & 69 lengths , she has only beaten two horses and one of those unseated coming out the stalls
Now 6/1
The Amelia George Story
Amelia George’s appearance in the apprentice race at Wolverhampton on Monday probably won’t draw much attention but the path the eight-year old mare has taken to get there is far from normal.
Bred by her owner John Ford, Amelia joined us originally in 2013 as a weak and immature three-year old. She took a while to get the hang of things and eventually ran the following winter where she twice finished down the field in maiden races. She was a lovely-natured horse but sadly couldn’t run very fast so John retired her and we found her a place at the British Racing School as one of the horses the trainee jockeys learn to ride on. She was happy in that job for three years before getting a bit too strong and the School got in touch with us to say that none of the students could hold her on the canter anymore.
Before finding another home for her, John decided he would try Amelia back in training as she had clearly strengthened up since last running over four years ago. The orders from him were always “Tell me if she’s useless” but with every step up in her training since joining us, she has done things very satisfactorily. We are not expecting her to have suddenly turned into a champion but she seems to be a lot better horse than she was so hopefully she can show some ability on the track – we shall find out on Monday!
Morning all well done if you been getting winners
