The PGA Tour continues this week with the Farmers Insurance Open at both the Torrey Pines South & North, La Jolla courses, San Diego, California.
The 156 field, with again the Top 65, including ties, making the cut will all be competing around both these par 72, parkland tracks for the $8.4m purse with the winner collecting the title and $1.3m.
Patrick Reed returns to defend his title when running away with five shots to spare at last year's event.
There will be multiple Torrey Pines winners in attendance this week including Phil Mickelson x3, John Rahm x2, Jason Day x2 and Brandt Snedeker x2.
The weather is forecast to be nice and calm throughout but temperatures will not peak past 20°c, much cooler than usual.
This event will be screened on Sky Sports Golf with live coverage starting at 5.30 pm GMT on Wednesday evening.
Just to touch on that point, this tournament tees of on Wednesday this week rather than the normal Thursday schedule, so be sure to have any pre-tournament wagers on before 2pm GMT Wednesday.
So let’s move on with this weeks selections in California for the Farmers Insurance Open.
Tony Finau
For my first and main selection I’m really liking the look off Tony Finau 30/1 EW Bet365.
The 32 year old from Salt Lake City will be taking part in the Netflix documentary, Drive to Survive, with filming starting at this week's event. I think that with this in mind then Finau, who is striking the ball so well at the moment, will put on a show in front of the extra TV cameras.
Also the fact that Finau hasn’t finished any worse than 24th around here at all seven attempts, this has to put him in contention this weekend. The recent Northern Trust champion is currently 16th in the world rankings and I can only see him in the Top 10 anytime soon.
He can use his long accurate driving to his advantage at this big hitters' paradise and has the iron and putting stats to back that up.
Finau has four Top 10 finishes here with three of those on the Top 5. His best performance was his last when finishing runner up at this event in 2021 so I can only see the ever-talented Tony Finau challenging again, all the way but this time bagging the Farmers Insurance and adding another PGA Tour Title to his name.
Sam Burns
For my next suggestion I'm looking no further than the one who was all over my radar last year, Sam Burns 25/1 EW Bet365.
I just don’t want to miss out on what I think is going to be a good year for this hugely talented 25 year old kid from Louisiana. If you read my previews regularly then you’ll know just how much I’ve highlighted this kid's credentials with many more crowns including majors on the horizon.
To rise from way way up in the high three hundreds to now become the 13th best golfer on the planet over the past eighteen months is truly a remarkable achievement.
With eleven Top 20 finishes in his last thirteen attempts, one of the others was 21st , this is simply consistency at its best. Add to the fact that six of those were Top 10 finishes with four of them being Top 5 finishes.
Now it gets even better for the prolific Burns as one of these tremendous efforts was a victory when winning the Sanderson Farms Championship just a few months back and another was a runners up place at the WGC FedEx St Jude Invitational.
Sam Burns is all over every leaderboard where he’s in attendance and this week will be no different.
With his other victory on the PGA Tour in 2021 being the Valspar Championship, I’m getting excited already about Sam Burns making it a hat-trick of wins soon, and it could be as soon as this weekend in California.
Sungjae Im
For my next pick I’m going to single out Sungjae Im again this week 30/1 EW William Hill.
I selected the 23 year old from South Korea to win The American Express last week as well as the matchbet Nap. After a slow start Sungjae got going but left it too late, finishing 11th and just outside the places but he did land the matchbet Nap for us beating Scottie Scheffler comfortably with four shots to spare.
Sungjae will be another who will benefit with his long ball striking this week and also has the short game and hot putter to help his cause.
He is 9th on the PGA Tour for SG around the green and 10th for SG off the tee. At only 23 Sungjae Im has already bagged two PGA crowns when winning The Shriners Children’s Open in 2021 and The Honda Classic in 2020.
He is another with a bright future ahead and it could get even better with a victory at The Farmers Insurance Open where conditions will suit this talented youngster.
Mackenzie Hughes v Talor Gooch
For my final selection it’s the customary matchbet and this week I’m going to advise Mackenzie Hughes 11/10 Nap Betfair to get the better off Talor Gooch who has been in quite poor form recently.
Farmers Insurance Open
- Tony Finau 30/1 EW Bet365
- Sam Burns 25/1 EW Bet365
- Sungjae Im 30/1 EW William Hill
- Mackenzie Hughes to beat Talor Gooch 11/10 Nap Betfair, 72 hole matchbet
Hi Caddy,
Love following your tips.
I usually do doubles for small stakes on both the USA tour and The European Tour.
As the one in USA starts a day earlier, do you have any selections for The Dubai Desert Classic.
The one in USA starts at 2pm uk time Weds so ideally would like before then.
