The PGA Tour continues this week with the Sanderson Farms Championship at the Country Club of Jackson, Mississippi and The Caddy returns with his best golf betting tips for the tournament.
The 144 field with the top 65 including ties making it to the weekend will all be competing for a share of the $7.9M prize purse with the winner collecting the Sanderson Farms Championship title and a winner's cheque for $1.26M.
There was no PGA Tour event last week with the Presidents Cup taking centre stage at Quail Hollow where the Americans secured a comfortable 17.5-12.5 win over the International team.
Sam Burns returns to defend his title having won this event last year with the lowest ever 72-hole scorecard at the Country Club of Jackson reading 256 -22.
The key to success in Mississippi this week with so many birdies on offer will be greens in regulation with a hot putter pivotal.
The weather is forecast to be sunny and warm from start to finish with breezes peaking at around 13mph.
This event will be screened on Sky Sports Golf with live coverage starting at 1pm on Thursday afternoon.
So let’s move on with this week's Sanderson Farms Championship betting tips.
Sam Burns 10/1 EW 1-8 places William Hill
For my first and main pick in Mississippi I’m going to strongly recommend that same man who I said would win this last year, the defending champion Sam Burns 10/1 EW 1-8 places William Hill. That’s right, we tipped the 26year-old from Louisiana at 16/1 here at MFT the last time this event was played and he duly obliged and I can only see more of the same this time around.
He’s another who was popping up all over the radar in 2021 and I did tell you all he’d win his maiden title anytime soon which he did. I also mentioned that there would be many more to follow and again the hotter than ever Burns didn’t disappoint winning another three PGA Tour titles since He won the Valspar Championship in 2021 then successfully defended his crown at the same event earlier on this year and he also scooped the Charles Schwab Challenge just a few months back.
That’s now four PGA titles in the bag for Sam Burns but don’t expect him to stop there. Now ranked the 12th best player on the planet after being way up in the hundreds, I’d say this talented kid has World No1 written all over him.
In the nineteen events that Burns had entered this year, he has won two of them as mentioned above with eight Top 20 finishes with four of them inside the Top 10. This tournament will be won and lost on the dance floors this weekend and this is where the stats and figures stack up in favour of Burns. On the PGA Tour this year, he is ranked 10th SG Putting, 9th Total Putting and 5th Putting Average at 1.721.
That’s as consistent as it gets on the dance floors folks and if you add the 8th for Birdie Average at 4.33 then the only person I see dancing all the way into the Country Club of Jackson Clubhouse is the ever-reliable Sam Burns as he makes it a famous five PGA crowns in Mississippi on Sunday evening.
Davis Riley 33/1 EW 1/8 places Ladbrokes
For my next best selection I’m going to point you all in the direction of Davis Riley 33/1 EW 1/8 places Ladbrokes. This is a home fixture for the 25-year-old Mississippi-born kid and he could be the one to side with in front of the local natives.
Still looking for that first maiden breakthrough PGA title, the signs are there if looking in the right places as he’s been knocking on the door with more than a few fine performances so it may not be too far away, possibly this weekend.
With two victories over on the Korn Ferry Tour along with a runner-up prize at the Valspar Championship, Riley also has eight Top 20 finishes this year with four of those being inside the Top 10.
This talented kid also has a knack for turning up at majors where he finished T13th at the US PGA Championship and a very respectable T31st at the US Open, both this year. On the stats front, Riley also has some good figures worth a mention.
He ranks 16th on the PGA Tour this year for Greens in Regulation Percentage at 72.22% and 2nd for Proximity To Hole from Sand. I just have a feeling that Davis Riley is going to burst on the scene in style this weekend in front of an enthusiastic home fan base when he is crowned a PGA champion winning the Sanderson Farms Championship in his own back garden in Jackson.
Russell Henley 25/1 1-7 places Betway
For my next prediction, I’m going to advise Russell Henley 25/1 1-7 places Betway. With a hattrick of PGA Tour wins already in the bag, the 33-year-old from Georgia has been playing some fine stuff this year to suggest another may be looming. In the first tournament of the year at the Sony Open in Hawaii, he finished an unlucky runner up and since then he has gone on to finish inside the Top 20 on five occasions with the best of the bunch being 5th place at Wyndham Championship.
Henley will be more than suited to this track, especially with his approach play where he has been sublime this season.
With a host of stats and figures in the bag on the PGA Tour this year I’ll share some that caught my eye;
- 7th for Greens in Regulation Percentage at 70.94%
- 9th Proximity to Hole
- 12th Birdie Average at 4.21
- 16th SG Total at 1.192
- 19th Scoring Average at 69.933
- 2nd SG Approach the Green
it’s clear for all to see that Henley arrives in Mississippi with a bag of tricks up his sleeve. If he can use his wizardly around this Country Club at Jackson then Russell Henley will definitely be challenging on the back nine at Sunday's final round as he turns those tricks into prizes, but which one will it be, well if you take the 1-7 places available if it’s not the jackpot you’ll have plenty insurance.
For my final selection, it’s the customary match bet and for this week's Nap I’m going to again advise Sam Burns but this time to best Sahith Theegala over 72 holes. There won’t be any stopping Burns this weekend so I’ll make it another 5pts Super Banker Match bet NAP.
