Two clubs who have made contrasting starts to their Nations League campaign meet in Kaunas on Tuesday evening as League C Group 2 leaders Romania go on their travels to rock-bottom Lithuania in a fixture that I’m keen to get the visitors on side.
Following their last-16 exit to The Netherlands in Germany at the Euros in the summer, Romania have made a perfect start to their Nations League campaign, winning each of their opening three matches.
79-year-old Mircea Lucescu, who was re-appointed as manager in August, 38 years after his first stint in charge of Romania, has overseen comfortable 0-3 victories away at both Cyprus and Kosovo, as well as a 3-1 win in the reverse fixture against the Lithuanians courtesy of a couple of late strikes.
Unsurprisingly, Lithuania failed to qualify for the Euros in Germany over the summer, as they finished eight points outside of the top two in their qualifying group, earning just six points from their eight qualifiers (W1-D3-L4).
Legendary ex-striker Edgaras Jankauskas – who is also in charge of his second spell as national team boss – has endured a miserable start to their Nations League campaign, losing each of their opening three fixtures, including home losses to both Cyprus and Kosovo.

Mircea Lucescu’s visitors have scored exactly three goals in victories away at both Cyprus and Kosovo – as well as in the reverse fixture at home to Lithuania last month – conceding just once and should prove to be too strong for a struggling Lithuania side that has already lost at home to both Cyprus and Kosovo and the reverse fixture in Bucharest.
