In this first one, we’re going to back Jordan Thompson to beat Kei Nishikori which the bookies see as an upset, but we completely disagree with that. In the other one, we’ll back Yoshihito Nishioka to keep it very close with Holger Rune, who hasn’t been playing well lately. Keep reading to find out all the details.
Thompson to defeat Nishikori @ 13/10
While the bookies see Nishikori as the clear favorite in this one, we highly disagree with that. Jordan Thompson is one of the trickiest players to beat because he’s just so solid all around.
There aren’t any weaknesses in his game unless you consider a cap on his talent as a weakness. The serve is solid, the forehand is solid, the backhand is good, and he can go to the net and volley.
Nishikori is equally good and, at his best, was one of the best players in the world, but those times are long gone. Playing at home will certainly inspire him, but he’ll need to be really good to beat Thompson here. We don’t really see it happening because the Australian is both younger and in better shape.
In a very close matchup, we expect him to get it done simply because this year has been the best he’s played ever. Nishikori has been solid lately, but it’s not the same level, and we don’t think it will be enough here.
Nishioka vs Rune – over 21.5 games @ 5/6
Rune won his first match in Tokyo, but the Danish player isn’t playing good tennis lately. Nishioka has been pretty shaky recently as well, but on home soil, we think he should be able to get it done.
They’ve played two times so far, and both of these matches saw each player win at least one set, so generally, it’s been a close matchup. Neither is playing well enough to win in straight sets, and with the way the matchup has shaped up so far, backing the games makes sense.
It should be a pretty close match, and when you expect that type of match, then the games are an obvious pick. For those more daring, a Nishioka upset has some value, but for those that want to keep it safe, backing the games is good enough.
