Deeper Blue ran a blinder at Newbury after drifting out to 9/1. At 11/2 when tipped up I wasn't a fan of going EW on him, but at 9/1 I would've been more than happy, so if you got on closer to the off and did EW at least you got your money back. The winner was the biggest priced in the field and I wouldn't have picked him to win if you gave me all month to study for the race.
The flat is officially back up and running as Doncaster kicks off the start of the new season. I won't be getting involved as most horses are making their return and the ground is soft, which as a combination looks deadly as a punter.
Newbury 2:10 – Kartoon And Co 11/4 (1pt, Bet365/WilliamHill)
I am not a big fan of backing the juvenile hurdlers when they go into open class against their elders, but I will make an exception for Kartoon And Co.
I don't think Dan Skelton's 4yo is badly handicapped off a mark of 112 as he has been running somewhat close to that mark against other 4yo's, but he makes appeal going against the older horses off 10st 2lbs and especially now he is going up in trip. He ran a nice race last time out at Sandown on soft ground, which was very testing, and it looked like he would appreciate further so the extra 3f he tackles today is a definite plus. The ground isn't going to be anywhere near as testing as Sandown, and given he has won on good ground that is probably another positive for him. The form of the Sandown race looks decent as the winner did finish 4th behind Sir Gino at Kempton, albeit miles behind but the form of those ahead of him and behind Sir Gino has been franked on many occasions and he looked like a well-handicapped horse off his mark at Sandown. The horse back in 3rd won a decent juvenile race at Newbury the time before, so the right horses were to the fore.
With the way that the Skelton yard is firing in winners, it wouldn't be a surprise to see this lad being smashed in, as they can do very little wrong at the moment.
Newbury 4:25 – Rath Gaul Hill 13/2 (0.5pt EW)
I tipped up Rath Gaul Hill last time out at Doncaster over 2m 3f and given I was sweet on his chances in that race, I think he deserves another shot today at Newbury over a shorter trip.
He was probably a bit unfortunate to bump into one at Doncaster last time out as the winner won off a mark of 104 and has since followed up at Carlisle off a 10lb higher mark, beating a horse who runs his best races at that track, so the form looks strong. Rath Gaul Hill was 12L clear of the third and though he was plugging on at the pace I don't think he was suited by the trip and given the way he was travelling through the race I think the drop back to the minimum distance will be to his liking. His mark is untouched, which is probably about right, and if we look to his Uttoxeter run on his chase debut, that form line has been boosted on several occasions with the winner winning again since, and the 3rd and 5th have won twice since.
He seems to be overlooked in the market and towards the bottom of the weights he has to be in this race with a live chance.
