Switzerland vs Belarus

, KO: 17:00 Oct 15, 2023, Kybunpark
Belarus

Switzerland will be aiming to consolidate their position at the top of Group I as they host Belarus in a European Championship qualifier on Sunday. The Swiss are yet to taste defeat in this campaign and should have too much quality for their visitors, who are finding things difficult.

Switzerland were not in action on Thursday as their clash in Israel was postponed due to the political situation in the country. As such their last fixture was back in September when they picked up a 3-0 victory over Andorra.

The Swiss have been the team to beat in Group I as they are yet to taste defeat after six matches. Murat Yakin’s men have picked up four wins in that run and can open up a four point lead at the top of the table with another victory on Sunday.

Switzerland often do their best work at home and have claimed two wins and a draw from three matches in front of their fans. They have kept clean sheets in both wins with a 3-0 victory over Israel preceding the victory over Andorra.

Belarus are unlikely to reach next year’s tournament in Germany as they currently sit eight points behind Romania in the second qualification place. They have only claimed one win in Group I and appear to only be playing for pride at the moment.

The Belarusians travel to Kybunpark off the back of a 0-0 draw with Romania last time out in the qualifiers. They struggled to create much going forward and could only muster just two attempts on target throughout the encounter.

That result highlights the major problem for Belarus as they often struggle to find their cutting edge in attack. They have now failed to score in their last three matches, two of which have come away from home.

How the bookies view it

Switzerland are considered overwhelming favourites among the bookies with a home win priced at 1/11 by Coral. A victory for Belarus is valued at 35/1 by Paddy Power while bet365 is offering odds or 11/1 for a draw.

Head to head

Switzerland have won all four previous matches against Belarus without conceding a single goal. They picked up a 3-0 victory in the reverse fixture back in March with Renato Steffen netting a hat-trick.

Players to watch

Switzerland have multiple attacking threats but Zeki Amdouni is their leading scorer with five goals in the qualifiers. The forward was also on target in the reverse fixture and is priced at 4/5 by Paddy Power to maintain his scoring run.

The Swiss have also impressed at the other end of the pitch with Manuel Akanji and Fabian Schar forming a solid centre-back partnership. Given Belarus’ attacking problems both men could lead the hosts to a win to nil at 40/85 with BetVictor.

Anything else catch the eye?

Switzerland are expected to be dominant on Sunday and alcohol be backed to win both halves at 5/6 with Paddy Power. Having earned a 3-0 victory in the meeting, a -3 handicap could also be considered at 5/2 with Paddy Power.

Having won 5-0 in the reverse fixture, Switzerland could be backed to win by four or more goals on Sunday at 5/2 with Paddy Power. The Swiss scored all their goals after the break last time out against Andorra, so the second half could be tipped as the highest scoring half at evens with bet365.
